black screen after awhile

#1 Post by 3nd »

hi , after i leave pc for awhile it'll go to a black screen from which it wont "wake up" , it shows the mouse curser and i can move it around ,but screen stays black.
its a laptop with a second monitor connected too, if that makes a difference...
any ideas why it wont wake up ?

The xfce4-screensaver (yes, sadly there ootb) is known to be causing such freezing issues (or black screen just with the pointer) since a long time (since MX-19 Beta). Get rid of it:

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge xfce4-screensaver -y

If you want something to lock the screen this will do it at one go:

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge xfce4-screensaver -y ; sudo apt update ; sudo apt install light-locker -y

whats weird is i left laptop on all night (logged out) while i was at work ,came home ,moved mouse and screen came on as it should .
then i logged in and left it awhile and it went black and wouldn't come on when moving mouse.
could it have something to do with being logged in / out ?
i did find a kinda workaround....if screen is black like that and i press the power button for a second or two and then move mouse , screen comes on.
ps: i was on Lubuntu before i switched to MX,and didn't have this issue then so it must be something with MX or xfce? (meaning its not my PC)

ok what i tried now is to go back to a previous kernel ,was on 6.1.0-18 but could only go back to 6.1.0-17, which didn't change anything same issue
then i figured out if the screen doesn't come on , and i press ctrl+alt+backspace (kill X server) ,screen comes on ...
so far seems to be easiest way to get screen back on
i'll let it rest with that i'm tired trying to figure this out lol

What does it show on the "Plugged in" screen's settings in the Power Manager?
Your pic in the first post shows the "On battery" settings
I imagine leaving it switched on for long periods it's running while plugged into mains power?
If not already set, perhaps try setting "Blank After", "Put to Sleep After" and "Switch Off After" to "Never" on the Plugged In screen in the Power Manager.
Drag the sliders all the way to the left to set them to Never.
