Trying to install WINE from the website but having problems.

#1 Post by RandomScumbag »

https://wine.htmlvalidator.com/install- ... ux-21.html

I have followed this to the install. and when I go to install, I get this error.

$ sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
winehq-stable : Depends: wine-stable (= 7.0.0.0~bullseye-1)
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

I have never used WINE much before, relatively new to Linux. However I am trying to get some DJ Software on my system but can't get to the install on the file. Any help would be great. Thanks. It says I have held Broken Packages, not sure exactly what that means. Everything I installed and use I have downloaded from the Discover store.

Is there a reason you aren't using the repos and MX tools for your wine install?

For MX you do not need dubious installation instructions from the www, not for programs that can be installed without problems with the in-house MXPI (MX package installer).
Installing from foreign sources can go well, but it doesn't have to and especially with Wine it goes wrong very often.
I use Wine now for years under MX, it is in the MXPI at the popular applications to find and I have NEVER had problems with it. It is just not always the latest version, but I do not care.

So just use the MXPI
Desktop AMD Ryzen 9 3900x, 32GB Ram // SSD ... enough
Laptop Acer Core I5-7300HQ, 8GB Ram / SSD intern 256GB&2TB
mx-fluxbox, what else?

In nature there are neither rewards nor punishments.
There are consequences.

even when I tried to install it through the package installer, I was getting the E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. run wine config as user. It wasn't installing there either so thats why I went to that website I listed. Is there anyway to fix the "broken packages" I don't really know how to do that I might just reinstall if I cant figure it out. I personally don't care about the latest stuff, I am still new to the Linux Life but trying to figure my ways around keeping a good running system. This is the first hiccup I have come across so far.

Disable this repository.

Code: Select all

deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/debian/ bullseye main
The winehq builds conflict with the MX builds.

I got it installed not really figured out but its working and thank you. I just installed wine32 from the terminal and it worked. But I am pretty sure something is messed up somewhere. Note to self, stay away from the terminal

No, terminal is OK, stay away from internet guides. ;)

Why?
Online guide may be very old and outdated.
Some online guides are for Ubuntu based systems. MX can get broken if you use some of Ubuntus PPA's repositories.

Online guides don't know, which version of base OS you have installed. Debian 11 or Debian 10 or Debian 9?
(in your example you have Debian 11, but you installed something from Debian 10)
This is the easiest way, to break your system beyond the repair.

That's why staying withing the distros ecosystem is the best for new members in Linux world.
