winetrick sha256sum mismatch AVL-MXE 2021

#1 Post by GordonS »

Hi,

AVL-MXE-2021-06-18-xfce4-openbox-amd64

I've been trying occasionally, for a couple of weeks now, to install GM.DLS using winetricks, and I've seen the same outcome for at least another package.

The install fails with a pop-up saying:

Code: Select all

sha256sum mismatch! Rename /home/gordon/.cache/winetricks/directx9/directx_apr2006_redist.exe and try again.
I do as requested and I've also tried deleting both it and the directory, but the problem persists.

Thanks,
Gordon.

Hi,

First, thanks very much for you support, it is appreciated!

Hmmm, this is one of those fun things that happens when using an arms-length utility to run a utility to fetch and run binaries from a foreign platform on your existing platform...lol

A Google of 'winetricks sha256 mismatch' comes up with a lot of hits about a lot of different scenarios.. it seems the most common cause is when Winetricks has gotten out of date and points to an old or outdated version of a specific Microsoft file...or Microsoft has updated the file to be fetched and the sha256sum has not been updated or matched with the new file..

'Winetricks' comes from the MX Repositories, perhaps try MX-Tools-->MX Package Installer-->Test Tab and see if there is an updated version of Winetricks to start with?

Hi Glen,
I tried a web search, but saw little of use. To be honest, these days IO avoid the big name search engines like Google, and my searches are sometimes less good.
Going to the MX Test Repo tab displays a scary warning about damaging ones installation, but I guess that's mostly if one does silly things with it.
winetricks does not have a gearwheel by it, which the header says means "upgradable", and wine-staging does, as it's held back of course.
That suggests to me that winetricks is current.

OK,

So I guess that answers that, so Winetricks in Test Repo is the latest available..

It appears as though a newer Winetricks can also just be pulled on to you system and run from a folder which may be worth a try. I'll be honest I personally run a dwindling number of very old (but good) Windows Plugins and I have never used Winetricks or enhanced an existing Wine install in any way so I have no personal experience or advice to share..

Here is a Winetricks article from WineHQ about getting a latest version which should be good trustworthy info:

I'm actually trying to get a good working installation of Band-In-A-Box, which has been a problem in the past, but now mostly, I think, runs as expected as an application. I have yet to try it as a plug-in, but I understand that that also now works. AFAICS, all I personally need is working, but there's an irritating error box that pops up in the background at start-up, that must be [OK]d before start-up will complete, and the built-in plug-ins, that I don't use anyway, appear to load but don't work. If I can't fix them, I don't personally much care, but I'm starting to write a how-to for running BiaB on Linux (AVL-MXE) and others may want those plug-ins.

I've also been trying some new Windows plugins that are good and useful, EZDrummer2, EZBass and EZkeys from https://www.toontrack.com/ and Scaler2 from https://www.pluginboutique.com/product/ ... 9-Scaler-2. I think all of those just installed and ran; if not, I had to do very little. All those latter running inside the Linux-native Reaper.

Once I've done those, I think I have only one application of any kind that will run only on Windows.

I'll give that a look and a go.
I did wonder overnight if maybe winetricks should also have been held back, along with wine-staging i.e., could AVL-MXE have a too new version?

I'll post here if I find a good outcome.

I have yet to get an opportunity to try this, but, for information...

It does appear that there's some mix-up with winetricks and checksums and/or URLs.
This behaviour seems to be known about, but may not yet be fixed.

There are also _example_ patches to the winetricks script:

A found close version GM.DLS redistribution file here:

https://web.archive.org/web/20141213092 ... redist.exe

I extracted it into a tmp directory, then extracted DirectX.cab from there into a further directory, then copied gm16.dls to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/drivers/ where I renamed it gm.dls

That appears to have made the error about GM.DLS go away.
I still have to find if it fixes anything else.
