I have updated to the liquorix kernel. I don't see any improvement - currently between 77-80C. As soon as I boot into OS X, the fan ramps up and brings it down to about 65C.

I do not have solution, your ondemand mode seems to work correctly 'around 800-900Mhz for each cores, so I do not know why your CPU temp is at 80°C .

Thank you; I have set the governor to powersave for all 4 cores. So far no difference.

I did notice that the CPU temp reports as bein at least 10C higher immediately after booting into MX.

For example:
1) I was booted into OS X - CPU temp was 61C
2) Rebooted machine into MX - CPU temp reported as 72C and only goes higher from there.

It seems the lowest it will start out at is in the 70's.

Is there a way to use a kernel that's much older - like from 2012 or 2013 that might be more suited to the hardware specifics of this Mac mini?

The system tray widget is called "indicator-cpufreq". You can limit the maximum frequency of the CPU in it with the Liquorix kernel to the lowest possible with "powersave", or to various middle ranges, but you then lose most of your performance. Your machine seems to be one generation too old to use iuvolt, which does work on my 8th-gen CPU to lower temperatures and power use, especially when under stress.

There's a package in the repo called macfanctld, "a fan control daemon for Apple MacBook / MacBook Pro computers", but reports in the Ubuntu forums seem to indicate that it makes the fan run full out full time at 4000 rpm on Minis...which would probably keep it cooler, but seems like an even worse situation than you have now. Maybe it has some configuration that they didn't read, though.

Trust me I believe this distro is a great place but if it does not work on your your cpu... you might try a BSD version. Mac OS is build off of a BSD base... or so I have heard.

Thanks for the tip about macfantld. I did try it and it was somewhat helpful in reducing the temp but I don’t think it will work in the long run. It seems to just make the fan work harder, which I understand is it’s purpose.
