Hi - I always use the same user id for my home partition-I used a different ID years ago and know it gives problems.
The userid is numerical, which you cannot choose. The username does not matter if you only keep data in the existing home.
I gave you already on way to solve this, it's not an workarround, as you can later mount the old home to use as new home.
EDIT: Correction: username does matter for the home-folder name only

you can see the ownership, byt UID:GID, with

Code: Select all

ls -n
the first user created by MX is 1000:1000.

Like fehlix, I'm leaning toward a permission issue, since startx also fails, its sounds like the user cannot create the Xauthority files necessary for X to start.

yeah, maybe. some of the group ID's are 100 instead of 1000.

go up a level (to the /home level) and run the command again please so we can see the permissions on the user folder

Is the above listing from logged into MX17?
The group-membership looks a bit different to the defaults to me.
Do show also the output of

Code: Select all

ls -anl
from within that home-folder, please.
Thanks

What I do see now, you are sharing the same home-folder with installation of Linux Mint.
Hmme never done this, as it will definetly cause trouble due to sharing same settingsfiles, which might not work with MX Linux, or the other way round. Sharing data-folder/partitions should have been done differently.

Hi-no not sharing-I have removed mx and installed mint -I never run the same home for different distros as the settings would clash. It takes less than an hour to install e new distro, and I have time on my hands. Will have another go with mx if anything shows up in the details I have given.
Still can't get my head around why I can install other distros without any home or login issues.

Just for advice to avoid such events.
It is probably best to make a data partition and hold all the common files in it (documents, pictures, downloads, . thunderbird, etc) and then add that data partition to your fstab as /mnt/data. Then symlink those files to your home directory. That way each system can use its own configuration setups and you can have all the same data in each install. As this is almost guaranteed to be a permissions incompatible /config problem. Just try the install as another user or add another user after install with the adduser command. If the other user works then everyone knows that we are looking in the right direction, if not it would be something else
