I was running MX-Linux on my older desktop, but the latest MX wasn't running well, so I installed antiX instead and that's working very well, though I miss XFCE. I was thinking about installing XFCE on antiX. I tried it once, but it made my screen go blank. Now, a couple months later, I'm thinking about it again. It sounds like using XFCE involves more than just installing it with synaptic package manager and clicking it under Desktop options -- xorg also has to be installed via the terminal. As I'm looking up instructions on how to do that, I'm sensing from online comparisons that if I install XFCE, I might as well be running MX-Linux because XFCE, as a midweight DE, is what makes MX-Linux a midweight distro. Is that the case?
Would LXDE be a better option to keep antiX light and fast? Would it come with a trash can (which is what I miss most about XFCE)? If I use LXDE, do I need to do more than install it and click it under desktop options? I'm not finding instructions for that online.
Does antiX + XFCE = MX? Would LXDE be better?

Use antix package installer instead of synaptic to install Desktop environments like xfce, xfce lite, etc.........
Not sure since I am not you about whether xfce or lxde will give you more joy on that hardware.
All I can do is show a old thread of mine show casing my LXDE antix install.

xfce has a trash can, but it requies the the gvfs package backend to be installed, which might not get installed by default when installing xfce on antiX. easy to add though. most of the desktop environment file browers, including pcmanfm on lxde, require gvfs to supply those extra virtual filesystem features like network:// and trash://
and no, MX is not antiX with Xfce. MX is not systemd free, and antiX is, so there while there is a lot of overlap with the live system and packages, they aren't the same under the hood.

Oh! I didn't even think of using antix package installer!rokytnji.1 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 8:02 am Use antix package installer instead of synaptic to install Desktop environments like xfce, xfce lite, etc.........
I used it to install xfce and rebooted the computer, and now I have a desktop that seems more like what I'm used to, there's even a trash can icon on the desktop. Thanks to both of you.
That's wrong. I have no idea how because I uninstalled both XFCE and LXDE via synaptic, and then I installed XFCE with the antix package installer and rebooted . . . and the desktop I have is LXDE. It's a mystery, but everything is working, so I'm just going to leave it.

You might try bento Antix
Antix based with LXDE desktop.

Actually Bento is an openbox (not lxde) spin of antiXputih wrote: ↑Tue Jan 25, 2022 3:11 am You might try bento Antix

I added Xfce to my antiX (using the antiX installer, not Synaptic or apt-get), but it's sure not the same as MX! Very fast, still very lean and mean.
Re: Does antiX + XFCE = MX? Would LXDE be better?
Well, update: antiX with Xfce doesn't seem to go the way I was always used to on other Xfce mixtures (MX, Xubu, Mint Xfce, Linux Lite, even SalixOS). I think it requires some systemd-like stuff, elogind or whatever, to run the way it does on MX. If you want Xfce, distros meant for that desktop are better to use, I think, that just throwing Xfce onto a distro that wasn't really intended to use any desktop environment at all.
If you are a "no systemd, no elogind" purist, not even Slackware can offer the satisfaction that antiX offers for that absolutely pure systemd/elogind-free mixture. But if you want a desktop environment to go with it, it might not be possible for much longer.

Actually. I am always comfy in Icewm. Fast. I run a ton of stuff. Stereo, PDF Manuals, Browser. This is my motorcycle shop wireless desktop AntiX 21/22 setup. It don't look too bad and is light on resources. My zzzfm file manager has a send to trash option for delete when right clicked. I never use it. I don't second guess usually when I want something gone. That is tint bar. Not a icewm toolbar.
My MX Fluxbox install is still a learning process for me. Everything works though.
