ITYM valets, aka "gentlemen's gentlemen." Butlers were the head servants of the household, supervising the rest of the household help including the footmen, cooks, maids and so on (but not coachmen, grooms or gamekeepers IIRC as they were outdoor help.)
Precision, but you got the point did you not?

turtlebay777 wrote: Sat Jul 06, 2019 7:51 am It goes back to the olden days when a lady was dressed by her maids rather than by her own hands.
Who dressed the maids? Did the maids have maids, or wear men's shirts, or blouses with the buttons and holes on the wrong side, or did they just wear sackcloth and flour sacks without buttons (but probably plenty of holes)? What about the rest? Surely not every woman was either a lady or maid.

(Actually if it makes you feel any better, I've heard or read the same story you have.)

Sometime ago I bought what I thought would be a nice work shirt at a thrift shop. When I went to wear it I realized the buttons were on the wrong side. Maybe I'd be better off having someone dress me.

Yup.

Whew, what a brawl. The NED team has nothing to feel bad about, it really was a closer game than the score would suggest IMHO..

I thought that, while still pretty physical, it was actually a cleaner game than the semi-finals. The early (deserved) yellow card for spikes to the leg when the ball was half a meter away seemed to rein in the worst of the shoving from both sides.
