choosing right linux

Hi, I am trying to find a good linux to install on my laptop and wives.

To replace windows 10.

Main things I want

Firefox, Decent File Manager easy to use similar to Zorin
reliabilty, Able to install redream emulator and wine 4
Printer wifi support.

We tried Kubuntu which we both liked but was not that keen on the file manager.

Linux Mint 19 which was very buggy, sometimes laptop didnt even start.

Now both on Zorin 12.4 which we really like almost perfect replacement. But its based on old ubuntu 16.04

And when wanting to install new apps like wine 4.0, redream etc find that sometimes it a struggle to install.

I am currently trying Mx Linux Live have not installed yet.

It says stable edition, will this be as reliable as Zorin.

I want to be able to have Wine 4 installed and also redream a dreamcast emulator https://redream.io/
it says it works on linux uses a tar.gz file

Can you post some info on your hardware?
First of the machine you plan to use.

Have you prepared a USB and booted it on the machine you plan to test first?

Firefox is the default browser.
Thunar file manager; others available.
After you boot the USB you can use Synaptic to look for others.

Redream may be in the MX test repo --where user requested apps are back ported for MX by the Repo Masters. If something you would like does not show up in the MX repo or the MX test repo, you can post a request with some info about the app, what it is, where it is and your experience with it. Someone will take a look and advise via the forum.

There are similarities and differences from Windows 10. A good place to start is by having a look at the MX User Manual available on the USB. Type Manual in the Start Menu text entry box.

Stay in touch. I've been using Linux since 2000, and I'm still learning new things. Used Windows since 3.10. it's come a long way; so has Linux.

Not sure what filemanager Zorin uses but its the nicest I have used so far very simple and clear. I didnt like the kubuntu filemanager it was not easy to use, I tried to make lots of changes but it didnt work how I liked.

Redream is not in any of our repositories. You would need to ask our packagers if it can be packaged for MX.

Zorin uses Nautilus and it can be installed from the stable repo

So just follow those instructions and see if it works which according to that it should. If you like Nautilus, you can easily install it by opening a terminal and typing

sudo apt-get install nautilus

type your password when asked and wait for the install process to be finished.

Replacing Windows with Linux is an interesting choice. First questions, if we still can have similar software. Good place to start:

Finding right Linux, can be confusing with the huge number of different distros available. Its helps when finding a friendly and supporting forum. This forum does well.

Then there is the question to find right type of desktop (XFce, KDE, Gnome, etc). If you chose MX Linux, which is good choice, default desktop is Xfce. If you liked Zorin with Gnome, you can install it easily. I am using Gnome. Most users here with Xfce.
