Since we don't have a restricted repository any longer, I'm just putting this up for manual install. I used only the libraries from Debian to build the packages, but I think Avidemux has some internal libraries that don't pass muster with the Debian guidelines or may have patent issues--probably the mp4 container stuff.
Anyway, the necessary packages are the avidemux-common, -plugins, and -qt4 packages. Install in that order with Gdebi, or in one swell foop with dpkg, followed by "apt-get -f install".
For new users, Avidemux reduces to a tray icon when rendering video, so the main window vanishes--it has not crashed. You can change this in the settings, too.
