[Solved] MX 18 freezes randomly

Hi All

I just put together a new computer. Ryzen 1600, B450 motherboard, 16 gig ram, 2 ssds, ati hd7770 video card. I have the / directory on a 250G m.2 drive and the /home directory on a 250G normal SATA SSD.

What happens is that the ssystem just freezes, it has happened about 3 times now. Leading up to it the system memory usage has been at anywhere from 2% to 20%, cpu usage is very low. I think it might be a hardware issue since it's a new build, but I need help narrowing this down to a specific component? Is there any diagnostic I could run? are there any error log files i could look at? it might be the video card which is kind of old, or I'm thinking maybe the m.2 SSD is acting up since i've never used one before I'm not sure if there's some BIOS settings i should change for it.

Make sure that you have the latest BIOS update (v17) installed. There were lots of problems with the Ryzen processors on that motherboard with earlier BIOS versions. Quick System Info will show you the version and that Info can help us help you so post it back here.

I found this thread on Ryzen soft lockups that suggests that a BIOS setting for Power Supply Idle Control may be needed, although looking through the BIOS updates for your board that may have been handled already in the latest BIOS version.

Your bios looks new enough.
You have to find the " Power Supply Idle Control " settings and set it from "auto" to "Typical Current Idle"

Just talking without knowing but might a kernel other than Nienna Kernel: 4.19.0-1-amd64 x86_64 be helpful (like the 5.0.6 Liqourix from @stevo) ?

I think the kernel is fine. I am using close to the same chipset here (AMD Ryzen 5 1400) and I think you should check your UEFI/BIOS firmware setting.

Hello again

I just got home from work read all of your responses, thank you so much for taking the time to look into this.

I have set the Power supply idle control to 'Typical Current Idle', and will wait and see if this works.
By the way this was in the Overclocking settings for my MSI B450 motherboard.

The bug is not easily reproducible and doesn't happen during every login session so it will take a few days to know for sure if this works.

Everything has been running smoothly thus far. It looks like the solution was to set the Power supply idle control to 'Typical Current Idle' in the BIOS settings.

Has anyone tried contacting the motherboard manufacturer or AMD about changing the default settings for this? Is this going to increase my power consumption significantly?
