MX 18.3, system package upgrade fails

#1 Post by Rademes »

Good day!
I have clean MX 18.3 x64 installation. When I try to perform sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade for the first time, the dpkg returns this error message, and the package upgrade fails.

The worst thing is, that this issue interrupts the whole system upgrade process. :frown:
I had to install this package manually using Synaptic. I suppose, the problem is in this package:
Check Updates_A.png
I can not use MX 19.2, because it does not working properly on my hardware (display flickering, video playback freezing).

Actually I experienced it on my mx18 installs.

A search of forum posts a few months ago may reveal the solution.

IIRC it was either

sudo apt install -f

Or maybe I just used

sudo dpkg --configure-pending

to sort out the other updates.

Then do another apt full-upgrade to be sure again.

Once you get that sorted you should also upgrade your kernel from that problematic 4.19.0-5 one. IIRC that kernel acted like it was building dkms drivers but the build actually failed. The latest 4.19 kernel is 4.19.0-10 (unless it's been updated) which these instructions will install for you:

Run MX Package Installer -> Popular Applications tab, expand the Kernels category, then install "Debian 64 bit (4.19)". Then run MX Boot Options and select the newest 4.19 kernel as default and click Apply. Reboot.

After quick search, I have found the topic:
viewtopic.php?f=91&t=58577
The solution was:
rudar wrote: Tue Jun 09, 2020 5:19 am Hello! I had the same problem and I solved it with this:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/desktop-defaults-mx-common_20.06.01_all.deb
sudo apt-get -f install
Good luck!
However, I think this is just problem workaround, not the proper solution.
This problem affects system upgrade, a process, which is being performed by all MX 18.3 users. New users will not know how to solve this issue. It will make them feel, that the essential system component does not working properly.

So I kindly ask you to pay attention to this problem.

Thank you JayM, I will do that.

Run

sudo dpkg -C

To see if any of the upgrade process was left outstanding. If there's no output, it means it's ok .

If there are updates left as yet unconfigured, use the sudo dpkg --configure-pending --configure --pending

Command

{CORRECTED}

Good Day again!
I have noticed, that in MX Package Installer there is another option in Kernels category: MX 4.19 which installs 4.19.0-11 kernel.

Will it be better to install 4.19.0-11 next time instead of 4.19.0-10, suggested by you in previous post?

in fact there already is a 4.19.0-12 kernel, with security patch for the bluetooth issue

If you'll notice the date of my post that you've quoted you'll see that it was a month ago. The 4.19 kernel has been upgraded already, as Tony says it's currently 4.19.0-12.

Run MX Package Installer -> Popular Applications tab, expand the Kernels category, then install "Debian 64 bit (4.19)". Then run MX Boot Options and select the newest 4.19 kernel as default and click Apply. Reboot.
