How to use OmegaT for translating

#1 Post by Jerry3904 »

Richard's guide, with a couple of insertions:
Changing to the new updated html, from v.20161202 to v.20161211,
in midstream using OmegaT for CAT

In case anyone is interested in using OmegaT for translating here are the steps
to begin. If you aren't using some sort of CAT (Computer Assisted Translation) tool
then you are working too hard, or maybe have lots of time on your hands. OmegaT
is a free, [open-source] professional CAT tool. There is very large community available for assistance
if the question is over my head.

For a new project use same procedure except you won't have any translation memory
to use until you generate it by translating. The 2nd and later projects are the ones
that really benefit from TM.

1. Download the new v.20161211 html manual.

2. My old OmegaT project directory is MX16UM-0-ESH (SpanishHtml); therefore,
I create a new project directory named MX16UM-1-ESH with Thunar beside MX16UM-0-ESH.

3. Open OmegaT: Project > New > and select */MX16UM-1-ESH, as the new project directory
and OmT will create all the sub-directories required within */MX16UM-1-ESH

4 .Copy the new html to */MX16UM-1-ESH/source and then
copy all pertinent Translation Memories from the old to the new project
in */MX16UM-1-ESH/tm/

5. In OmegaT, select MX16UM-1-ESH, the new project to open and continue translating.

6. For a new project, just start translating and press Enter for the next segment.
For changing in midstream, in order to catch all the new changes, go to the top of the file
in OmegaT, and then use Ctrl-u to find untranslated segments. Some will be left the same,
others might be new information added to the latest version.

7. There is a Quick Start section that is presented when OmegaT first opens [in your selected language, along with other documentation]. Read that and you will be better prepared to continue to take advantage of this "Time Machine".
Professionals use CAT because it allows them to do more work in less time and earn more.
