Dell XPS Developer Edition question

#1 Post by blindside »

Hey ya'll. I'm sure this has been answered, but my search fu is weak tonight. This Dell comes with Ubuntu installed and I'm not really a fan of this distro. I have used MX in the past and liked it a lot. Does anyone know if this particular "Developer Edition" and the Ubuntu installed do anything special that I need to know about, or can I go ahead and safely install MX? Also, have there been any issues that have needed to be resolved after installing? This is the 2019 13" version. Thanks so much.

No idea. Can you run

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxrz
in a terminal then copy/paste the results here wrapped inside of

tags (the </> icon in the forum editor)? That might give us a clue whether there's anything to watch out for.

I'm sorry but I am not sure how to wrap it in code tags. Still a newbie

Click the pencil icon near the top right of your post, and either type

with the first one at the very beginning and the last one at the very end, or select all of the text then just click the </> icon in the editor's toolbar. Then click the Submit button.

Thanks. that's SO MUCH easier to read.

I don't see anything at all on that system that might have problems with MX. Core i5 CPU, Intel GPU, Atheros wifi, 8GB of RAM. It should work fine. Just don't install any Ubuntu or other PPAs in MX, or enable the MX Test or Backports repos in MX Repo Manager, and you should do fine.

The only thing that might possibly be an issue is the NVMe drive, but if it works in Ubuntu it should work in MX too.

BTW, see here for information about creating a full-featured MX Live USB under other operating systems and distros.

So sorry about the editing. I won't do that again and I learned something new. Thanks so much for all your help brother. You have been a lifesaver. One additional question... another user said they had issues with it handling XFCE. Any thoughts?

I don't see why it should have issues with Xfce, but you can always "test drive" MX from the live USB and find out before you install. If you make a full-featured USB by installing the MX Live USB Maker in Ubuntu and using that to burn the MX iso to your USB stick and press F5 at its boot menu and enable persistence (perst_all) you can even run MX completely on the USB, so you can test it as long as you like, play with customizing its appearance, install apps from the repos, etc. for as long as you like before you install.

One thing: be sure to check the md5 sum of the iso you downloaded against the values given on the MX download page just to make sure the iso file is good.
