For future reference...
Most Distros (especially Debian-based like Mint) don't remove the old kernel when adding/updating a new one - the previous kernel should be accessible from the Grub menu under "Advanced options". So if it happens again, just boot from the old kernel

From a Former USMC grunt. I think you should delete the link in your name to your google blogspot. Just asking nicely an all.
I got no problemo with the non clickable "
STRENGTH AND HONOR - ALWAYS ! "
I fired a weapon before. I used to take things serious, But I am much better now.
Don't even ask me for a explanation.
Because If I gotta explain. You just would not understand.
Yeah . This forum and distro is cool beans. Pretty laid back and all. I like it here and at AntiX forums. I have no dog in a hunt at Manjero or Mint.
Happy Trails from The MX Linux Scooter Tramp Mod.

All in all, a great MX Linux rescue story.

They may have done it like I did the 4.15.0-1 kernel upgrade in our test repo; MX 17.1 ships with the 4.15.4 kernel, but if you upgrade that from the TR, you end up with a 4.15.17 kernel overwriting the stock 4.15.4 one. I had to add a line to the kernel to get it to force rebuilds of proprietary video drivers like nvidia-driver. That makes me wonder if the Mint kernel upgrade might have failed to do so, since that sure reads like the symptoms of losing the video driver.ChrisUK wrote:For future reference...

Of course, Debian's latest security update of Stretch's stock 4.9 kernel also caused a lot of headaches for many users, so they can't point fingers either.

There's a reason Mint classifies kernel updates as Danger Will Robinson by default. And if your hardware is fully supported, why would you?

I was not replying to your OP but to Uncle Mark's post below:Hi, asqwerth
Are you referring to kernel patches for meltdown & spectre?....
He was asking a general question and my general reply was that people might update kernels - even one that worked really well on your hardware - in order to get a newer version that had the necessary patches. There's a reason Mint classifies kernel updates as Danger Will Robinson by default. And if your hardware is fully supported, why would you?
