On my PC(not my laptop) dual boot Windows 10 / MxLinux17
I launch the #Windows10April2018Update : 3 h download + installation
multiple reboot and last reboot I figure it out : not only Windows delete the MBR but it just simply ERASE my non NTFS partitions,
no linux anymore, bye bye MxLinux17
so pay attention with windows dual boots....
Merci pour l'info mais je ne mélange pas windows et linux.
@Ead: except for privacy and requirements Windows 10 is not so bad. I must use it for professional needs everyday and it works, yes it works. But when it comes to lean and mean, MX has nothing to fear..

Well, it seems you have not been nice to the other OS :lipsrsealed: :footinmouth:
Wipe the extended partition. Create a 3rd ntfs primary data and after that partition create an extended for mx-linux... ext4 , swap etc.
[ For experts only: A further hint would be leave 4-8 MB free space just before the new extended partition. :exclamation: ]
In the way you have done it before the other OS might "adjust" (e.g, during such mammoth OS-update)
the partition table entries for it's "own" ntfs-partitions ignoring the "unknown" ones.
If you do it as just recommend the OS will not touch the partition entries for the extended partition as it has nothing on it!
Just for the record: If you would have real important data on that unallocated space you could recover the data using photorec and further even recover partion-table entries using testdisk – with the later surely making the other OS ready for fresh install.

While we're on dual boot with Win 10 subject.

The other day, the Spring update wiped something and was not able to run the laptop at all.
Had set the Linux distro as 2nd to boot with Grub Customizer thinking that it would be safe to Win 10 update, but not so.
Had to start from scratch.
Any idea where things went wrong?

If your linux partition would have been still intact and visble from Gparted using a live-boot
I'd recommend Rescatux's and/or Super Grub2 Disk from one of the smartest grub2-gurus on
this planet https://www.supergrubdisk.org/
You could than boot into linux and reinstall/recreate grub
from wthin running linux via MX-Grubrepair
or like that:

Code: Select all

# adjust your boot/drive /dev/sda or/dev/sdb etc. accordingly
# sudo grub-install /dev/sdX
# sudo update-grub
Happy booting! :happybday:

update : it takes me 5 minutes to repair my xxxxxxx installation, for those who eventually will encounter that sort of issue, take a look at this site (for example, so plenty...) http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-ma ... br-windows

So I downloaded the last windows iso and put it in a usbkey, then boot up the iso
Follow the instructions for a new installation,
Choose your language and click Next,
Click Repair Your Computer,
Select Command Prompt,
and type bootrec.exe/fixMbr (or bootrec /fixMBR)
Reboot and voila, Windows is back for what it worse (In my case the update, which break it all at first, takes the installation back and continues to install itself...
I will install MXlinux back soon on another partition
Thanks again and sorry to talk about Windows on this forum ;)

@Protokol - wanted to thank you for that last post.

Although i prefer to run Linux on a separate usb with SSD, there are always lingering issues with other usb related devices (headset, printer etc.).
So, now i'm going to try MX again in dual boot on single drive with Win10 and if something goes wrong, i'll go back to your last tip. ;)
