Hi all - just to update. I have had a friend replace the CPU paste to rule out overheating. But I'm not sure if it maybe a graphics this?

Here is some output.

Yeah it has to be related to the graphics I think.

I've installed MX Linux 17.1 on several Lenovo laptops, including the X220 without any problems. However, I also don't recommend playing anything beyond Supertux or Supertuxcart on something that old. Thermald is not supposed to be compatible with all Intel chips, and actually incompatible with some. Here's some more info. about thermald ...

Same here, both X220 and large brother T420 both work great on MX, but lots of video and games pushes the cpu and temp will jump up. The Sandybridge is pretty good for basic uses but I wouldn't push it. These machines can get warm under stress. But I'm at 42C right now with just 2 tabs open on FF.

My old laptop used to run hot and would trip. I don't remember now if it froze; I think it just unexpectedly shut down. I was able to watch these temperatures climb until it reached the trip point and it would shut down. I suspected dust buildup in the fan and heat-sink area. I was too lazy/nervous to take it apart for a thorough cleaning, so I just got one of the bottles of compressed air dust cleaners, and sprayed through the various vents. Quite a few dust bunnies flew out of there, and it ran cooler after that. That was with Mint. It runs even cooler now with MX.

If its an older computer, and you suspect some high temperature spikes, it may very well just be some dust build-up that is preventing your fan from dissipating the heat. Most anything electrical that can have even small amounts of static charge will collect dust over time.

On the last computer I bought used during first boot it shutdown with a fan control error. I thought I was going to have to return it but hit the fan area with compressed air and it has worked fine since. Fans can be a big problem if dirty or sticking.
