Alright! The 17.1 original release had no problem with a dist-upgrade.

That's very strange, let me test more.

This is on the April snapshot - I removed mx-tools and then reinstalled, and there's a recommendation for mx-panel-orientation/mx-defaultlook, but mx-defaultlook won't install

edit-
Probably not right, those just are leftover recommends from 16

I think I narrowed it down to libc-bin re-configuring (triggered by curl, but not only) so if I take April 32bit snapshot and do a "aptitude reconfigure libc-bin" I get the problem, I don't get it with the MX-17.1. I will run a diff to see what changes... Let's continue this discussion in the threat where people reported the problem originally: viewtopic.php?f=97&t=43798

I recreated the 32bit ISO, now without the panel problem. The new ISO name: MX-17.1_May.2_386.iso

I wonder what is wrong with UEFI on Monthly Snapshots. I just unable to boot it (no error, just returns to BIOS boot selector. Tried it on HP 450 G3 & MacBook Pro 2014.
Original release works with both, Snapshot only works with HP on legacy mode.

I've just retested both ISO's ( MX-17.1_May_x64.iso and MX-17.1_May.2_386.iso )
within VirtualBox in EFI-mode. In both cases I got the GRUB-menu for the EFI-boot
and could boot in EFI-mode successfully
You might check whether you have within your ESP's somewhere the
fallback efi-loader '/EFI/BOOT/fallback.efi'.
You might see the short message from UEFI like I got within Vbox:
Could not open /EFI/BOOT/fallback.efi
As it appears EFI tries to use a fallback efi-loader before
it takes the MX-loader bootia32.efi or bootx64.efi, resp.

Would you mind to try a manual method to make the HP boot on efi mode
by coping bootia32.efi or bootx64.efi, resp., from the monthly snappshot
onto the system ESP fallback dir /EFI/BOOT/. But make a backup first.
Or/and if you have the ms fallback replace/rename existing
EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi with MX bootx64.efi, i.e. rename
bootx64.efi to bootmgfw.efi within /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/.
If that work to make it the sanppshot boot, you might later
reverse from the backup.

I did all of that, didn't help.
Since other distros (Debian 9, Mageia 6, Ubuntu (16, 18) Fedora 28) worked for me in UEFI, I guess the only right way is to experiment with ISO modifications.
I never did that with Linux so will gladly get some help.

Well, it's simple like that: I assume you try to boot with USB-stick, right?
Just copy the antiX folder from the newer snapshot to the antiX folder of
the working USB-stick with a original (older) release.
Surely this can also be done with the ISO itself, bit USB is quicker!
You might need to create the USB-stick not within DD-mode, as this would make the Stick not writeable! :snail:
