SOLVED - Duplicate Panel Icons

#1 Post by stevedude »

I'm newer to Linux and have never used the XFCE environment before, so please forgive my newbie question, but I want to learn all about MX Linux. I am using MX Linux in a VM [GNOME Boxes] because I want to make sure this will meet my needs before taking the plunge and installing it on my system.

My inxi - F is as follows. Basically, I installed the panel on top, and have running applications set to icons only. As an example, I have Firefox as an application launcher, but every time I open a new window, the panel populates with multiple Firefox icons. I would just prefer to have the application launcher just have some type of indicator that Firefox is open, not multiple icons spanning across the panel [Refer to enclosed screenshot]. Is there a way to do this? Couldn't find this specifically in the manual under customization or previous posts detailing the same issue. ~Thanks

I don't know the appearance of Gnome Boxes, so, some questions;

Are all of the icons to the right of the MX Menu icon: opened applications?
If not: which are program start icons and which are open/running applications?

Firefox tends to open a new window for some operations (printing, downloading) that show up as a 2nd or 3rd icon in the open apps.

In Panel preferences, when you select Windows Buttons and edit the options, some of the choices might help, although I only use an XFCE environment here. It looks like you already have button labels hidden, going by the screenshot, so I was wondering if you'd already explored such settings and if GNOME options differed in any way? I can't think where else you might go to modify panel icons and those for open applications.

@Richard. Anything to the right of the Terminal icon are open applications. 2 Firefox's and Synaptic are open. I do not want to see both Firefox icon for each instance of Firefox. Wondering if there is a setting for XFCE to do that.

@tascoast. That is the configuration window I used to remove the labels from the icons shown on the panel. With a fresh install, it defaults to text so at least I was able to get my open Firefox instances to show as icons saving some space on the panel. Couldn't find anything in what you provided to show only i instance of a running program.

This is what I'm after: Currently I run Solus and even though I have 2 instances of Firefox, it shows 1 icon, with an indicator above it to show that I have 2 instances running. Just wondering if XFCE can do something similar: The Launcher and the running instance icon are the same, and not separate.

Again, not being familiar at all with XFCE, I don't know it's capabilities. I'm using Firefox as an example, this occurs with other programs too. If XFCE doesn't have that capability then it is what it is.

Thanks

On Xfce4, click on an empty area of the panel, the click on
Panel > Panel Preferences > Items > then double click on Window Buttons to bring up the config window.
Under Behavior > Window Grouping, change Never to Always.

@Richard. That will help tremendously. Thank you.

Would love to see just the launcher icon act as the running instance indicator as in other Gnome-based distros and docks, but this tweak will add more real estate to the panel.

I'm sold, As an aside, I wanted to like Solus, but so much software is missing and not easily install-able. While playing in the VM with MX Linux, it ran fast and has all the software I use available in the repos. Love the customized configuration tools and I really appreciate the fast responses and willingness to help.

For others looking for this information - I also found a setting under Windows Buttons to hide a running application icon unless the window is minimized....perfect!

[Now if I could just figure out how to mark this thread as 'Solved"]

EDIT - My final solution is I use a vertical panel of launchers on the top-left side without any 'Windows Buttons', my status icons are in the upper right that will hide upon a window being maximized. I created a dock of sorts (a 3rd panel) of running applications (Windows Buttons) that only appear if a window is minimized and that group together if there is more than 1 instance of a program running. I am a minimalist and this gives me the most real estate for launchers and open windows. Staring to really like XFCE

Thanks - I was looking for a Forum tool link or something. That's easy enough.
