Well guys the acid test is done! I connected the laptop via an ethernet cable and the delay is gone :happy: :happy: :happy:
Who had their money on the Broadcom wireless card? They won big time :number1:

It may be possible to overcome the problem if you need wifi.

However, you might consider changing the card. Dell use a number of different wireless cards for the Inspiron 1700. There is at least one non-Broadcomm, an Intel based one. They are incredibly easy to swap on that model as they are under a removable cover on the underside. The antenna cables are fiddly; you need to pull them off by the connector, not the wire, and get them square to the card when replacing them. Don't use any form of tool - just your fingers, and some patience!

You will find loads of them on ebay; they will be the same on all Dell laptops from that era.
