Icon placement

#1 Post by GraveyardDiver »

Hello all,

I have been trying to find out how I can make the desktop icons NOT "align to grid". I haven't been able to find anything in the desktop settings.
For example in Linux mint I can right click the desktop and uncheck the "align to grid" option and then I can space the desktop icons as close to one another as I want.

It would be nice to find out how to do this in MX so I can position my icons as I like.

Thanks in advance.

Which desktop version of Linux Mint are you comparing with?

Cinnamon, Mate, KDE, or Xfce?

I had to go check.

Linux Mint 18 (Mate) 64 bit.

Right click the desktop and uncheck "keep aligned".

I can drag the icons literally on top of each other if I want. I'd like to be able to do the same thing with MX.

In my recent thread viewtopic.php?f=93&t=44198 #7 you might like to try creating .gtkrc-2.0 (copy and paste - from above link -into an editor then save into ~home) and try playing with the icon-spacing values in the last section. Try setting them to 0 for instance?

PS The " . " in front of file name is important as the script is a hidden file.

I guess I'm missing something. because with default settings, I can put the icons whereever they want. and they stay there between logins/logouts.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

ah, playing some more, you can't get closer than the icon size and font size of the icons. so far apart = easy. closer together = hard.

That's not possible with Xfce. It will always snap to grid.

It is possible to edit a text file to alter the spacing of the grid, but not to remove it. That's a limitation of Xfce, not MX

As TenderFoot has said, you can alter the virtual grid size. You can't remove the snap-to-grid effect.

It was hard for me to see any snap to grid effect on my hdpi display so it did not seem as much of a limitation.
