Gnome - how do I add a program to the menu? SOLVED

#1 Post by rickc »

I've installed TOR, and the only way I can run it is to open the browser from the file location. btw I downloaded tor directly from it's website, as install from synaptic didn't work for me.

I've had a good look online and can't find a way to add TOR to the menu. With the dash, you can usually add any program to favourites when it is open. But you can't when there's no menu entry...

Cheers

you are going to need to make a new desktop file for tor and place it somewhere the menu knows to look. usually /usr/share/applications, but ~/.local/share/applications should work too, and just for the particular user, if that sort of thing is important.

I used sudo nautilus and copied the tor file into the /usr/share/applications

There is a cross over the icon and it cannot be launched from there, and it doesn't appear in the menus.

When you say "make a new desktop file", what exactly do I need to do? Cheers

Get the file out of the applications folder, it's not meant to go there. Gnome users can use menulibre to add new additions to the menu... but did you check the Debian wiki for any instructions for the Tor Browser? They suggest using torbrowser-launcher to install it. For now, use the MX package-installer to install it from the Stretch backports repo, that should get it and create a menu entry automatically.
