Frozen desktop & browser

#1 Post by nalerive »

Hi all!

I've been having problems with my desktop environment, which also affects anything that involves opening a window (internet browser, file manager, terminal, etc.). I've tried running

Code: Select all

xfwm4
and that has helped to some extent: I can browse again, but my desktop still does not work (no clock widget, right click does nothing, no files visible).

Once I could not even see the cursor, so I run

Code: Select all

startx
and that worked, but
- I had the other desktop background (blue, with the little mouse)
- and after restart, the problem came back again.

I tried that again today, and so far so good (no clock & cpu widget, though): I can see my files and use the right click, but I am afraid the problem is not really fixed. Any idea what it might be?

For more details:

Code: Select all

Linux nalerive 4.15.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.15.4-1~mx17+1 (2018-02-23) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Thanks in advance!

1. Did you check the md5sum of the ISO you downloaded?
2. If you can execute in a terminal

Code: Select all

sudo inxi -Fx
then copy and post the output in the forum
between </> tags then someone may be able to obtain some clue as to what has gone wrong?

Thanks for the quick reply, Richard!

Code: Select all

sudo inxi -Fx
and I got this:

There's the option of switching from the modesetting video driver to the intel one in MX Tweak*. Or maybe it's some bug in our particular kernel, and a newer one installable from MX Package Installer would help (you keep the original kernel as a backup boot option).

MX Tweak just installs a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf file, so if that somehow renders the GUI unbootable, boot to a text mode login and remove it after logging in:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
and the system will revert to the default modesetting driver on the next boot.

Hi again,

I tried Stevo's suggestion:
</s>There's the option of switching from the modesetting video driver to the intel one in MX Tweak*<e>
Unfortunately, nothing happened, which I can see because I cannot access to my desktop through right click, only via file manager.
What should I do here?:
</s>maybe it's some bug in our particular kernel, and a newer one installable from MX Package Installer would help (you keep the original kernel as a backup boot option)<e>
Is there something different I could try via MX Package Installer?

FYI: I can still work on my laptop and desktop, but they keep crashing from time to time after booting. The only thing that still helps me to some extent is running

Code: Select all

xfwm4
but that hasn't solved the problem.

Thanks

Check the kernel section in MXPI for installing a recent kernel.
