I have installed MX-14 on my old laptop from a magazine cover DVD, and it is working well.
An icon in the notification area tells me there are more than 300 updates available. I would think it`s generally a good idea to install all of these updates. However, when I go into Synaptic Package Manager and mark them all, it returns a warning ; "You are about to install software that cannot be authenticated. This may allow a malicious individual to damage or take control of your system".

I can see no way to identify the files that it is warning about, or to remove them from the list for downloading. So there seem to be only two options:
1. Abort the update and carry on using the system as it is, or
2. Ignore the warning and install all the updates.
I am inclined to go for number 2, but does anyone have any advice ?

I don't know why you got this message, but MX-14 is very old at this point and I think you would be much happier if you install MX-16.1

It's possible that one of the repository keys is expired or otherwise missing.
If you runin a terminal there will be a message if this is the case.

The problem with that is the limitations of my hardware. This laptop can read a CD or DVD ; it can write to a CD but not a DVD. If I download the ISO for a new version, the file is too big to fit on a CD. Until I figure out a way around that (or MX-16 appears on a cover DVD) I am trying to make the best of what I have.

There are ways to get even an old machine that doesn't support booting from a USB Flash Drive to boot from one. There is also a "CORE" respin that fits on a CD; that has many of the big programs such as LibreOffice and VLC removed--some of those have replacements such as SMPlayer or Pale Moon on the CD, but you can always just install what's missing.

What about trying antix, it fits onto a CD.
