Lot's of different 'first's'. Kano over at KANNOTIX was early also. He made KNOPPIX easily installed. Knopper was probably the first popular LiveCD though. It would work on almost any PC. Last one I tried it still would.

I would say MEPIS was the first LiveCD with user-friendly GUI installer.
