A blurb about Xfce on the MX website

#12 Post by BitJam »

Unless it was there and I missed it, I think we need to add a short blurb about Xfce on the MX website. At the least we need to tell people we are using the Xfce Desktop Environment. I realize we do say MX is based on "Linux, Debian, and Xfce" but this doesn't clue someone in unless they already know that Xfce is a desktop environment.

Here is a short blurb from the XFCE home page:
Xfce Desktop Environment

Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment for UNIX-like operating systems. It aims to be fast and low on system resources, while still being visually appealing and user friendly.
I don't recommend using that description verbatim.

I've described it as a compromise between a full blown desktop environment like KDE or Gnome, and a plain unadorned window-manager like IceWM or Fluxbox (or OpenBox?).

At Peregrine's suggestion, the MX website has now been changed to highlight the terrific video tutorials people are making by adding a moving image of what is available in the left pane and reducing the screenshots to a single clickable image to the whole collection.

Check it out!
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox and Windows 10
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

Just my personal preference, but I think it changes a little too often.

I find it hard to look at the tabs and see what they are because it distracts by moving so often.

Perhaps the speed at which it changes is OK for others.

If it were me I would make it a little slower.

Just my personal preference.

See what others think.

@duane - Placing your mouse on the image or the title pauses it for as long as you want. Clicking the "See All Videos" link takes you to a page with thumbnails of all videos. Click on any one to watch it.

Thanks, I see that now.

Would a person coming to the site for the first time see that?

I didn't.

I was afraid a newcomer might only see the videos and not spend enough time looking at the tabs if there attention was constantly drawn back to the moving box.

Just my take on it.

It may be fine.

I certainly did not intend my comment to offend.

I know you folks spend a lot of time on this and I certainly appreciate everyones efforts.

It's necessary to have different viewpoints expressed. You'd be surprised at how helpful it's been around here.
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

There is a small inconsistency with what you get when you click. For instance, clicking on the scrolling "introduciting MX-14" video gets you a page with the that video playing and links off to the left for others. Clicking on the second video in the scroll (in my case, the recent liveUSB video) gets a page with the player, but not the links to the left. I think the version with the links is much more useful and friendly, and allows easy discovery.

Kudos to the site revisions. They look really good.
