Re - vlc

The latest needs libsmbclient from wheezy-backports. If we install libsmbclient from wheezy-backports, we get this

Code: Select all

apt-get install libsmbclient -t wheezy-backports
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libasn1-8-heimdal libgssapi3-heimdal libhcrypto4-heimdal libhdb9-heimdal libheimbase1-heimdal libheimntlm0-heimdal libhx509-5-heimdal libkrb5-26-heimdal
  libldb1 libntdb1 libroken18-heimdal libtevent0 libwind0-heimdal python-talloc samba-libs
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libasn1-8-heimdal libgssapi3-heimdal libhcrypto4-heimdal libhdb9-heimdal libheimbase1-heimdal libheimntlm0-heimdal libhx509-5-heimdal libkrb5-26-heimdal
  libldb1 libntdb1 libroken18-heimdal libsmbclient libtevent0 libwind0-heimdal python-talloc samba-libs
0 upgraded, 16 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

After this operation, 23.5 MB of additional disk space will be used.

One option would be to take DeaDBeeF out of the ISO and put it in the Meta-Package, since VLC plays everything and users tend to have particular choices. That would free up 26 MB.

Though then an update immediately appears to add in almost 4 MB...so 22 MB net gain.

Or I should be able to rebuild VLC against the stock Samba -dev packages to prevent that...or is the new Samba in backports a big improvement, or has it been found to do much of anything?

The only real advantage of the Samba 4.1.3 in wheezy-backports over the 3.6.6 in wheezy is that Samba 4 can act as an Active Directory Domain Controller for Windows networks. Now, that's a big deal for Enterprise users - not so much for anybody else.
And it comes at the expense of no longer completely supporting OpenLDAP which is common in Unix/Linux networks.

For a desktop distribution there's no advantage in shipping with Samba 4. Anybody who needs it will certainly be able to install it themselves.

When the 3.6.x series stops getting security updates that will be another matter. That's currently scheduled for the end of August 2014. If they keep to that schedule then upgrading will certainly be appropriate then.

when given the option, I would prefer to stick with the wheezy repo instead of backports. Going over the threads, it seems we have more issues with the backport versions of things... Maybe its just me. :)

Why on earth does vlc need samba-libs?

It can open a smb:\\ type network link to stream media files.

Personally I mount the share instead of specifying a link. I've never used vlc to open a smb stream.
