MEPIS 12/MX 14 Community Repository: The SMPlayer Thread

#1 Post by Stevo » Mon Jul 22, 2013 11:55 pm

This is the first updated SMPlayer build for the M12 community repo. SMPlayer is a great QT4 GUI for the mplayer or mplayer2 media engine:

http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/

0.8.5+git5552 (pulled from the SMPlayer source code git repository) is now in the test community repository. Ricardo has being fixing a constantly changing Youtube API, he thinks now with 5552 it can update itself to fix the issue. This will also get rid of that updated nag :crossfingers: :)

It seems youtube did it again and smplayer fails to play many youtube videos (mostly music videos).

I'll try to fix it as soon as possible.

Experimental: since r5552 smplayer can update the code that decodes the youtube signatures, so it won't be needed to update smplayer every time youtube makes a change.

Update: 0.8.6 is now in the test repository, along with an update to smplayer-skins and smtube-1.8. I tried a problem "Vevo" Youtube music video, SMTube informed me there was a problem and would I like to download an internal update to fix this. After the update, I was able to view and download the video (Anna Kendrick's "Cups"). There are also a few more bugfixes.

SMPlayer has changed its versioning; from now on it's year.month, so this new update is 14.3.0. We now have it in the test CR. Changes include:

SMPlayer 14.3 released

Postby rvm » Tue Apr 01, 2014 10:43 pm
Previous version was 0.8.6, this new release is 14.3... What happened? Now the version is just the year and month of the release.

Version 14.3

The control for fullscreen mode has been rewritten and improved. Now it is displayed over the video.
(Windows) New option in Preferences -> Subtitles to enable or disable the use of the Windows font directory. Disabling this option prevents the annoying font scanning.
Some presets have been added to the audio equalizer.
(Experimental) Possibility to play (non-protected) blu-ray discs.
Better support for multimedia keys. This can help control SMPlayer with a remote control.
New option in the playlist preferences for adding automatically other files in the folder to the playlist.
The option "Move the window when the video area is dragged" has been fixed.
(Windows) Now it's possible to open Windows shortcuts (symlinks).
Better support for Youtube.
(Windows) Better screensaver disabling.
Many bugfixes.
Possibility to compile with Qt 5.

We have a new version of SMPlayer in the test repository, 14.9.0+svn6511, which adds experimental support for mpv as the playback engine. The developer did a lot of work, almost seven thousand lines of code, to get most of it working. Here's a link to the developer's blog where he notes what's not working, advantages of mpv as the engine, and new features thanks to mpv. (some need mpv >= 0.7) http://blog.smplayer.info/smplayer-with ... available/

Did something go wrong with the upload?

Code: Select all

And it's not here: http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/testr ... /smplayer/

Though apt-cache policy says it is (or should be)

That's weird, we'd better ask Tim. The package upload is also here: https://copy.com/izPsm1d1XTiGvpwr

I don't know what happened. I uploaded the package again just now and it's now installable.

The avatar is a clip from a bad '50s sci-fi movie called "The Brain from Planet Arous".

There's a lot of other animated gifs from it here: https://www.tumblr.com/search/The+Brain ... anet+Arous

Too bad avatars are limited to 62 Kb, I could mine this WTF video for many more:
