@bled - which version of debian dog are you using? stretch 64 bit? Do you have a frugal install or a 'normal' install to a hard disk?

Just did a snapshot with MX Snapshot using lz4 compression. The result was a 3.1 GB snapshot and it took about 90 seconds. I verified in the log it was lz4 compressed.

It also creates md5 and sha256 sum files, one for linuxfs too so maybe about 10-15 seconds are probably spent for that. Unless you run this on a 20 year-old PC it won't take 10 minutes and in any case it won't create a 1.3GB file.

I audited it last year and AFAIK it hasn't been updated since then.

ouch, it unconditionally discards the entire contents of usr/share/man, /usr/share/doc/, usr/share/gtk-doc/, usr/share/gnome/help/, usr/share/info/

Every 1 or 2 months, OP will post something about lz4 or a puppy-based distro, or both.

He first went on a posting spree about lz4 compression around the time MX17.1 was released in March 2018.

Now, just before MX18 is released it happens again? Hmm.

But the regular lz4 and puppy posts thereafter are so strange. Especially if you say that debiandog hasn't been updated for some time.

+1 - bled's online 'manner' might be blunt, but it did lead us to use lz4 compression

with a pass of another algorithm
without losing the ability to install?

That might use fewer resources
at a lower temperature.

That's correct. I didn't know at that time that lz4 was so fast (but obviously not that good at compression), don't think we needed to change anything to make it work in mx-snapshot there's a compression option in mx-snapshot.conf

I don't know, but won't you lose the speed light CPU utilization benefit (also compressing already compressed file is usually less efficient than compressing a flat file)
