Backup of gmail emails

#1 Postby rdotex » Sun Jul 27, 2014 5:24 pm

I would like to backup my gmail emails, but do not have a clue how to do that. Any help would be appreciated. Oh, I was reading about how to do this using Thunderbird, but I cannot find it in the repositories, even though there is mention of this in some of the discussions I have read.

Enable the mepiscr repository and Reload. It's in there.

Since I'm not sure how to do what lucky9 suggests, I'll go with the icedove.

Oh, by the way, while waiting I read that 'getmail' was an easy way to do this. So, I went to the repository again and thought I had installed it, but I cannot find it anywhere on my computer. It didn't act any differently when I clicked on the install button, but it doesn't show up anywhere that I can think to look on my machine.

Why? They should remain on the gmail servers in perpetuity.

there are a variety of reasons this might want to be done, not the least of which is archival purposes or offline access. who knows when google will decide to lock us all out!

For future reference see: http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php? ... Repository

To enable it use Synaptic. In Synaptic's Menu under Preferences/Repositories you'll find this brings up a window with all the repositories. Highlight the mepiscr one and then click the little box on the left to enable it. Disable it after you Reload and install Thunderbird.

Methinks you should consider the official Google facility at http://gmailblog.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/download-copy-of-your-gmail-and-google.html
