Thanks for the tip. Used the downloaded file despite it already being there with no success. Convinced it's the card cos now - konsole is telling me that its configured & network is up but network assisstant wont pick-up a signal and Wicd says no wireless networks available. Going out tomorrow to buy a device - thinking a usb device would be easier - any suggestions?

usb "wireless N" is good. Did you try what erican did?>

Success at last!

I eventually simply uninstalled network-manager.... and wicd picked up the connection instantly.

Why I didn't do this before I will never know.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys.... you really encouraged me to keep going with this :)
