My CPU cooler finally arrived today and of course I had to swap CPUs right away! The hardest part was getting both of those AMD-socket clips onto the clippydoo thingamajigs on both sides of the CPU. I had to push down on the last one with a screwdriver in between the fan blades to get it down low enough to clip on. But it's finished, and the new cooler's fan is a LOT quieter:

Making a snapshot only takes around 10 minutes now vs. around 40 minutes, and the CPU utilization never got above 50% at 42 degrees C. It idles at around 45C which is warmer than the Athlon was, by maybe 6 to 8 degrees. On the other hand the Athlon used to get over 50 degrees at 100% utilization when I did things like making snapshots or remastering persistent USB sticks, and took a lot longer too. So even though its quiescent temperature is higher its overall temperature when under load is lower, so (hopefully) on average it shouldn't consume a lot more power than my Athlon dual-core did. I think this was a pretty good upgrade.

I remember that screwdriver bit.. yep.. scary stuff that was for me when the screwdriver did help but nicked the mobo in the process. Yikes. At least all is ok.

Glad you got it on, and what a difference huh.. must feel great :D

Sorry I didn't take pictures. I was too busy trying to get the new fan and heatsink clipped onto the mounts.

I'm not sure if I could ever do what you did and buy components to build a new system one at a time and have to wat until I had them all to assemble a new computer. I'm not that patient.

Oh but that was in the house quickly enough. Only two or three stores and one of two days of waiting. I just needed to wait for a good day as I have to take my own components (the bod) into account as well lol

Well, this is the Philippines, so two or three stores there equates to a dozen or more here, with lots of "Out of stock, sir" from sales people. And one or two days for you would probably take me several months and many shopping excursions to get everything, and with some lowering of expectations included. I can't even get all of the ingredients to cook a particular recipe without having to visit three or four different supermarkets unless it's a local recipe or I do lots of creative substitutions. There are even supermarkets here that have no ground coffee even though they grow it here, only instant, and some have only "3 in 1" instant coffee with creamer and sugar mixed in. That's just the way it is here.

BTW I had a few moments of panic earlier about an hour after upgrading the CPU and cooler. I started smelling burning plastic/insulation/electronics! I checked my system's temperatures which were the same then opened the front door and sniffed, and realized it was just one of my neighbors burning their trash as they still do here. *WHEW!*

Is that Antrim's old computer? :campfire:

I still love that story of his about beating his machine then setting it on fire. I have been SO tempted to do that in the past!

@Eadwine Rose, now I understand your concerns about CPU temperatures on your new system. After all this time of seeing idle temps in the 30s it's hard to get used to seeing them in the 40s and not be concerned. Yesterday afternoon I even took my CPU cooler back off and redid the thermal grease as I think I originally used too much. This time I used the wee packet that came with the cooler and spread it thinly and evenly all over the CPU, trying to drop the temps by another degree or two.

I had to edit my conky for when the CPU temperature's font color turns from green to yellow to red. The 95W Phenom II quad-core does run hotter than a 65W Athlon 64 dual-core even with a brand-new cooler with a 120mm fan. It will begin to throttle itself at around 62C and shut down at around 71C, so I made the conky's colors < 55 = green, 55-59 = orange, and >= 60 = red so it warns me (orange) when the temperature is edging toward where the CPU starts throttling and again (red) just before it does throttle but well before it would shut itself down. I had it set up according to the temps of the Athlon so it would turn orange at 45C.

I'm probably going to need to add a second 80mm fan in the rear of the case too. They're cheap at CD-R King (if they have them in stock) so I might get two and replace the existing fan with a new one while I'm at it, to possibly reduce what little noise it's making. Then (other than fan filters, which are in progress) I'll have done all that I can do regarding cooling.
