With a lot of distros I've tried, I found the the 'chromium-ffmpegs-extra' often helped with playing video on Opera. It worked on openSUSE yesterday when I installed it. But, it doesn't seem to be in MX repos.
It's not in Debian:

Code: Select all

$ apt policy chromium-ffmpegs-extra
N: Unable to locate package chromium-ffmpegs-extra
There are packages in Ubuntu, I see from a web search, but the ones I tried had at least one dependency error. I found an older one here: https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/chro ... mpeg-extra, and it will install.

Would this help:

Code: Select all

# Get codecs for Opera:
sudo -v; curl -L vvld.in/lm64 | dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile - | sudo tar x -C / --wildcards \*libffmpeg\.so --xform 's,.*/,usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera/lib_extra/,'
The ffmpeg version you got would be:

Code: Select all

# Show ffmpeg version:
strings /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera/lib_extra/libffmpeg.so | grep -m1 'FFmpeg version'
FFmpeg version N-92393-g05759213af

I am not the original poster. Like for the OP, the command here did not work for me. Fehlix's command above apparently did. I only installed Opera tonight, so I haven't identified any videos that don't play correctly to test.

Code: Select all

Well, thank you Fehlix! That command did indeed work!

I have never managed to get Opera on MX (or Debian) to play clips/video on my www.afl.com.au website... and this time it worked!

I guess my next question is - will I need to repeat this command each and every time there is an upgrade to Opera on this system? If yes, then I need to be able to save it somewhere lol.

Thank you!
Michael

Ummm... am I supposed to mark this as solved or something?

I guess there is still the question about whether or not the chromium-ffmpegs-extra (or whatever name it goes by) is ever likely to be introduced to the MX repos.

Cheers
Michael

It depend's how often Opera changes it's underlying chromium engine. But in the past it worked quite a while, until a newer chrmium-ffmpeg was needed.

As opera does not provide a clear indication, which version of those ffmpegs are needed for a neewer version to work properly, it might be not so easy to automate and adjust the ffmpeg installer.

Thanks Fehlix :) I've saved both the link and the commands elsewhere so they're there if I need them :)

It's interesting actually with the chromium-ffmpegs... not that it helps with the MX situation at all lol. I just installed the Zorin 15 beta on a spare drive today to have a look at it. I like to have 3 browsers mostly... a banking/security one, a general use one and a back up one. If possible I choose Opera, Firefox and Chromium. In Zorin Firefox was standard, as tends to be the norm, Chromium and Opera were both available as snap packages (irrelevant for MX I know), but there was also a package called chromium-ffmpegs in their standard store which was for any 'other' browsers that might need these codecs. And, I have to say that both the Chromium and Opera snaps played my AFL website perfectly.

In MX, I tend to use Firefox and Pale Moon, and either Waterfox or Falkon... and now there is Opera... thanks to you :) I have no idea what all those terminal commands meant... but hey, I can copy/paste as well as anyone :) I did understand, though, that they downloaded and put the libffmpeg.so package into the correct location to give Opera (and other browsers like Vivaldi) a chance to work. Someone is a very smart cookie :)

Cheers
Michael

For future reference, both of fehlix's commands are in the Wiki:

Thanks, Jerry, I should have better explained what the newer alternative is doing.
Actually this extracts directly from the downloaded ubuntu deb-file the ffmpeg codec,
the original one is in sense more oriented for systems, where no dpkg-deb for
extraction is available, but it would fail and needs to get a new offset as soon as the deb-package as changed.
Saying that, suggest to keep the newer variant only.
