I loved Alta Vista back in the day, but they weren't the first real search engine. Two years before Alta Vista was WWWW, the World Wide Web Worm. Instead of Alta Vista's Advanced Search menu, it let you use Perl style regular expressions.
I used both for quite a while as they often found different things.
It was sad when Yahoo bought Alta Vista. It did make Yahoo's search better, but IMO Yahoo was already irrelevant by then.

Testing Qwant for about a day. The results of searches are good. I cannot detect a difference from Google. The narrow time search function is not as granular as Google, But a minor quibble.

Actually ddg threw me. Looked It up just now to get Duck Duck Go. Acronyms always challenge me.

I hope it continues to improve because even though I like Startpage--it still depends upon Google results. Duck Duck Go is better in every way but results for me :(
Yes, I've basically dumped Startpage, after using it for years, as I just don't trust G**gle in anyway, shape or form. I've been getting used to DDG, it does a pretty good job. Though I think (I may be deluding myself) that the over the recent years, the variety of search engine results is diminishing. Like a kind of G**gle (& co) censorship...

I also remember using Alta vista, it was so frustrating. You'd (I'd) end up out on skinny branches of the search tree of links I'd have pressed in an attempt to get the information that I wanted, that had nothing to do with what I wanted. All at miserable dial up speeds!
