That's actually great. It's even better that is Linux and not a variant of BSD because it means MS will contribute back the code to mainline Linux kernel and more people will benefit of this

Have to agree with both, it has to have frozen over and everyone should benefit from it. Looks like they are taking the Android approach and making Linux the first layer and gatekeeper to everything built on top of it. Thats a real "hats off" & "bow" to the real leader in the game; what an admission and compliment to Linux!

I keep thinking MS may one day purchase Ubuntu. The "Linux on Windows" may be leading in that direction, and the IOT move to Linux by MS may be telegraphing it as well. I think the upcoming info gathering in Ubuntu 18.04 is about Mark selling Ubuntu. I suspect he lost interest after the convergence thing went down the tubes. MS would love to gain ground on the server side. Will be interesting to see what happens.

I don't think they have to pursue Ubuntu. I think that for all intents and purposes their 2006 agreement with Novell gave them immediate and continuing access to SUSE's intellectual property.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
Aspire V5-571; CPU Intel I3; 500 GB SSD; Intel 2nd Gen Graphics; 8 GB Ram
Aspire XC-866; i3-9100; UHD 630; 8 GB ram; 1TB HDD

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

It is going to be interesting to watch MS. They got crushed on mobile by ios and Android. Linux is very strong in the server market. The IOT war is officially over as MS has capitulated to the Linux Kernel. If desktop computing more and more comes down to the browser then Chrome/ChromeOS has them beat there. Owning arguably the most popular Linux OS (Ubuntu) would give MS plenty of room to move around with Linux, and Mark has acted pretty friendly toward MS as MS has gotten cozy with Linux at the same time. Since Windows everywhere ideology no longer seems to matter to MS there is not much that would surprise me at this point.
