The last one I did had an R4 of some description on board and I swapped in an EVGA Ge Force 8400 (it was the least expensive one I could find in Toronto).
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
Aspire V5-571; CPU Intel I3; 500 GB SSD; Intel 2nd Gen Graphics; 8 GB Ram
Aspire XC-866; i3-9100; UHD 630; 8 GB ram; 1TB HDD

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

j2mcgreg wrote: The article only says that only users with older AMD kit are having this problem, but it doesn't say what versions of Windows are involved. When Microsoft initially released Win 10, video cards with Win 8.1 supported drivers worked fine. Not anymore. Coincidental to the widespread exposure of the cpu flaws, Microsoft now requires video cards to be fully supported in Win 10. I have a number of clients who experienced this problem and who had their problem solved by switching out their existing video card for a known good one.
How would this effect the laptop industry, specifically the older ones? New drivers?

It may be possible to swap out a laptop's video card depending on how accessible the manufacturer made it, but the reality is that the labour costs will likely outweigh the value of doing so. In my experience, the client has two options: either buy a new machine or install linux on the existing computer ( which is the option I usually suggest).

Just thinking of my dual boot laptops, in which I do use Win 10 the odd time.

I believe that the number of users with laptops with the affected old AMD CPUs and Windows 10 on those machines is going to be quite small. More will be using previous Windows releases.

From the article:
It is understood the bug is present in modern Intel processors produced in the past decade.
Then can I assume my Thinkpad T61 is old enough to have avoided the flaw, or is it chronologically right on the line of being uncertain? I believe the T61 was released in 2006 or 2007.

That's incorrect. From what was reported CPU's going back to the 1990's are affected. Intel has two bugs while AMD has one bug which is less damaging of the two. Update the kernel and you will be fine.
