"horizon" (!!!)

#1 Post by malspa »

Some of you old-timers will remember me from back in the Mepis days. I downloaded MX-17 (64-bit) this morning and used dd to put it on a flash drive (for now, I'm not wanting to set up live persistence and all that). Very nice! Impressive. Excellent job, folks. Thanks so much for all your hard work!

(Nomacs as the default image viewer: I had never heard of this one, but I like it. Nice choice!)

I like having MX in my tool box, on a flash drive. MX-17 replaces MX-15 for me (I skipped MX-16). I think that the community has gone far above and beyond what Warren did with Mepis. Just wanted to post a shout-out, right quick. "Hi" to Adrian. Later.

Hi Malspa, nice to see you around, enjoy the new MX-17. I don't think there are many full-featured distros like MX that do Live so well: persistency, remastering, snapshotting. Wish more people gave it a try, but we don't have the marking clout of Ubuntu...

Hi Eadwine and richb! Yeah, I'm always lurking here, regularly, but I haven't been posting much as I'm not sure that I have a lot to contribute. Always lots of good info here, that's for sure.

Yeah, but I think MX is getting a lot of attention, perhaps more than some people here realize. You probably know that already because of the number of downloads, I guess. I'd been seeing lots of positive comments around the web, even well before this latest release. I've put in a few good words here and there, too.

Didn't your name use to have different case for different letters? ;)

The attention has pros and cons. A few video reviewers were reviewing early betas (and even an alpha 5!) - when issues were still being identified and ironed out - and their comments can leave a questionable impression on the minds of some of their viewers if the latter don't try it out for themselves.

I suppose MX has sort of become a victim of its own reputation for releasing alphas/betas that are already highly usable, hence the early previews.

Lol. Yeah, well the whole idea behind the user name was that M.A.L., those are my son's initials. So I'm M.A.L.'s Pa.

Gosh, seems like only yesterday when little M.A.L. and I were sitting in a pizza joint and I was thumbing through a copy of the Linux Pocket Guide that I'd just picked up that afternoon. Our waiter asked, "Hey, do you use Linux?" I replied, "No, but I'm gonna learn to." I didn't know anything about Mepis or Debian or anything like that back then. Lol, now my "little boy" is a lot bigger and taller than I am, makes a lot more money than I make, uses a Macbook instead of Linux or Windows, and he's a grad student as well. How time flies.

Wow yeah time sure flies, to think that I have been around almost 12 years now. I started out with Mepis 2005 pro beta 2, IIRC, it's been a long time ago at least so the thinker isn't thinking as well haha. Little less healthy here (was recently diagnosed with Ehler's Danlos Syndrome, and my hands, which are adorned with silver splints, are now worth half of what my car is worth  but don't anyone bad approach me with bad intentions now, cause I can slap harder, and with more damage  ), but I am still trying to have as much fun on my computer system as I was back then. Just a LOT less scared about it hahaha.

Good to read your story, and even though you think you have nothing to share.. you do ;) It's good to see a familiar face from the ol' days
