Make MKV
Re: Make MKV
FWIW, a tutorial on usage (as well as a copy of the build instructions) is available here:

Re: Make MKV
That looks really interesting and I would like to try it too. But after reading the link from skidoo, I don't understand why Handbrake is needed. Wouldn't ripping a DVD using MKV create an MKV file which is then directly playable through VLC and therefore generally what someone would want?
Re: Make MKV
If Makemkv has the ability to rip encrypted discs, we can't include it in our repo, since that breaks US law.
Re: Make MKV
Well we have libdvdcss, vlc, handbrake, wouldn't fit makemkv into the same slot, somehow?

Re: Make MKV
I looked around and there does not seem to be a deb file available anywhere that I could even try to test. Apparently it's build from source or nothing in the debian world.
I also noted that its website says that the beta key expires at the end of November, and it didn't really look promising that a new one would be issued (hard to tell; and also not sure whether the key applies to the linux version).

Re: Make MKV
My understanding is that the beta key will be replaced again, as it has been in the past. Here is the place to get it:

[edit:] Here are github instructions for Debian unstallation:

I expect that you won't find much in the way of support for Make MKV in the Debian world, as it is not free software, apart from any possible breeches of the laws of certain countries.
I think I had to jump through similar hoops to be able to install MKVToolNix. You just do each thing in order. Copy & paste to the terminal makes it pretty easy in the end.

Re: Make MKV
Thank you for that instruction page Handy. That looks doable. However, is there any way, once the package is installed, to copy it over to other machines on which I would like to use it? I gather this process of building from source does not create a deb file. Is there any way to create one easily after install?
Re: Make MKV
Someone else will have to help you with that nathan. I'm a babe in the woods when it comes to the Debian system, as my past package management history has been gathered elsewhere, for a long time.
