Can not boot from Newer 5.6.10 Kernel

#1 Post by namida12 »

Tried to post this in antiX forum, but tells me it is a duplicate posting, yet can not see this posting...
----------
Typing this from another computer, not the Ryzen 5 3400G that will not boot:

Cannot boot newer Kernel, installed 5.6.10 from package manager

starts to boot – I get a black screen, about 20 seconds then line after line rapidly scroll.

Then it appears is is going to boot yet I have a few errors
[ 66.816718] kfd kfd: error getting iommu info. is the iommu enabled?
[ 66.816723] kfd kfd: Error initiallizing iommuv2
[ 66.816825] kfd kfd: device 1002:15d8 NOT added due to errors
[ 66.877416] udevd[607]: error opening ATTR{/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08:.1/0000:07:00.0/firmware/amdgpu!picasso_ta.bin/loading) for writing: No such file or Directory

Then just before it stops <———-
[ ok ] Starting slim:slim
[ ok ] Starting OpenBSD Secure Shell server: sshd
Applying power save settings…done
Applying battery charge thresholds…done
[ ok ] Virtualbox Additions disabled, not in a Virtual Machine

You may need boot parameters "iommu" .. Hit the key E on grub and add among ro quiet ...

Code: Select all

amd_iommu=off iommu=off amdgpu.noretry=0

Code: Select all

amd_iommu=off iommu=off amdgpu.noretry=0
Typed e and added that info with a space after quiet.

Still have same errors listed.

Found this info enabling iommu in my ASRock motherboard - Checked it was disabled. I change that to enable.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ASRock/comment ... ble_iommu/

Now these errors disappeared

Code: Select all

[ 66.816718] kfd kfd: error getting iommu info. is the iommu enabled?
[ 66.816723] kfd kfd: Error initiallizing iommuv2
[ 66.816825] kfd kfd: device 1002:15d8 NOT added due to errors
Currently still stuck with these errors

Code: Select all

[ 66.877416] udevd[607]: error opening ATTR{/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08:.1/0000:07:00.0/firmware/amdgpu!picasso_ta.bin/loading) for writing: No such file or Directory

Try

Code: Select all

iommu=pt
instead of the two iommu=off commands
That sets iommu to pass-through mode which usually lets the kernel bypass problematic BIOS/UEFI implementations.

Thanks Tim, I enabled it in bios/uefi. I am presuming iommu will not create problems in the antiX system I am trying to run.

I am guessing that there must be something missing, or not right to let my Ryzen gpu not load or display the graphics screen properly.

I can load and run MX-19.2 ahs with kernel 5.6.0-02 but I could not run the 5.4 antiX kernel in this ASRock motherboard. Looks like 5.6.10 will run, much different results than the 5.4 kernel I kept avoiding.
Using the 5.6.10 kernel I can sign in, unfortunately startx fails. Guess I am going to use the antiX-19.2-4.19_kernel_x64-full Hannie Schaft 6 April 2020 for a while longer.

I was on 4.9 kernel as I could not do a kernel update until anticapitalista released a standalone Hannie Schaft version with the 19.2-4.19_kernel, what I am using now.

Thinking out loud: I could run inxi -F from a command line since i can sign in with the newer kernel... lets try that...

I have a Ryzen 7 2700u w/ Radeon Vega mobile graphics and I need these boot codes to boot correctly.

Code: Select all

amdgpu.noretry=0 amdgpu.dc=1 iommu=pt
Not exactly the same as yours, but close enough that it's worth trying.

This may be useful (in fact I'd post it at the very beginning).

Same Cpu and similar gpu (maybe the same as we don't know yours' chip no) ( this one is 15d8 )
