On an SSD, you can do:

blkdiscard /dev/sda
This will send TRIM commands to the whole surface of the drive. The drive's controller will afterwards start reporting zeroes for everything. In the background it will start wiping the actual memory cells of the drive. You are relying on the controller doing its job correctly for this to be safe.

This only took 2 seconds on a 480 gig SSD? Running live media.

I could not understand how to use Bleachbit from Live Media to zero the /dev/sda.

This command failed

Code: Select all

root@mx1:/home/demo/Desktop# dd if=/zev/zero of=/dev/sda
dd: failed to open '/zev/zero': No such file or directory

Seems drive is frozen - Reason for cleaning this drive It does not work half the time. Can not be seen or mounted, and will not boot after a good install. Want to return without my information to secure a replacement drive.

Code: Select all

root@mx1:/home/demo/Desktop# hdparm -I /dev/sda

/dev/sda:

Replace zev typo:

Code: Select all

# dd if=/zev/zero of=/dev/sda
==>

I trusted the manufacturer and used the quick method once. Then I read Blu's comment on this article:

We have nwipe in the repos, on MX-19 we'll actually include it because it's a very small and useful utility. It has a lot of ways to delete the drive including some specially designed for SSDs.

Does it use a different name, using live media MX-18.3 and can not find menu entry.

Nothing happened when I typed nwipe in a terminal after checking Synaptic to confirm it is installed.
Must be in root, to open Nwipe 0.21 interface.

Pressing the space bar allowed me to choose the Patriot Burst SSD, but using S or Ctrl S does not start procedure.
Adrian found nwipe youtube but seems the controls are different...

It's a terminal program, you won't find it in menu, just launch it with "sudo nwipe" I think start is Shift - S (it tells you on the screen)
