hp envy 17t-bw000 with AntiX

Am running a flash stick: This is a new to me 2018 built computer - Has a non updated Windows 10 O/S.

I turned off the Secureboot, tried to boot to UEFI with the flash stick, unfortunately it stopped booting a little bit into the process.
An hour later back into Bios enabled Legacy and then it booted rapidly.

I never use windows, thinking about wiping the drive and doing a AntiX install.

Would have liked to used UEFI Booting, but am guessing that is not going to happen since I can not boot without enabling Legacy mode.
Guessing I can do a legacy GPT format to have more than 4 partitions?

Since you still have windows you can download and run Rufus to burn the antiX ISO to your USB stick. You may possibly have to tell Rufus to use a gpt partition table on the USB for it to be able to boot in UEFI on your system. Rufus is pretty good at making UEFI-bootable USBs.

An msdos partition table supports having up to 15 partitions while gpt supports something like 256 IIRC, so even if you end up having to install in legacy mode four partitions shouldn't be a problem.

To install GRUB into MBR of a GPT formatted drive it is highly recommended that you create at the beginning of that GPT disk a tinny,small 1MB "bios_grub" partition. Do this with Gparted before you create any other partition. Size 1Mb leave the partition un-formatted but mark the partition as "bios_grub". A GPT formatted drive has a couple of advantages over DOS/legacy formatted drives. But in order to have a robust Grub-install into the MBR of the GPT drive it is required to prepare the drive with such an extra small bios_grub partition. You can have up to 128 primary partitions on a GPT drive.

I will try it on this install, but was certainly disappointed I could not do a UEFI install in this computer using the antiX created Flash Stick. Could not even boot antiX, or MX in UEFI mode, after turning off Secureboot in bios in this HP Laptop with a flash drive...

JayM, I never use windows unless I am getting well paid to eliminate malware. The Idea of using Rufus to create a flash drive for antiX, or other Linux will never happen. But thank you for the suggestion.

We could certainly fix this too. But you would need to provide detailed information about this "Could not even boot antiX, or MX in UEFI mode". I might have an idea, that this might be potentially related to a fixed bug within the UEFI-grub, which will be sorted in antiX/MX 19. OTOH, legacy BOOT with a nice GPT-disk and a bios_grub partition is also sans soucis, so to say.

I downloaded antix-19-b3 and tried to wipe the drive and install.

Gparted partitions looked good, including 100MB fat 32 partition.

On reboot windows came up haven't a clue where from if i can believe Gparted?

However on the install there were windows NTFS format choices , but I used the entire drive, and Gparted does not show any NTFS partitions...

Maybe i need to run dban from a CD to properly eliminate any hidden partitions in the hard drive? Not certain where windows O/S is hiding.

Probably, the 100MB fat32 is the UEFI ESP partition, which still contains WinOS UEFI bootloader.
And booting in UEFI will show the WinOS boot.
I guess, you need to either boot in BIOS(legacy)mode, and create a new partition MSDOS-table before creating new partions and install in BIOS mode ..
or keep the drive with GPT-partion table type to boot in UEFI mode , but do some house keeping and "clear" the content of old entries within the FAT32 ESP.

Sorry so late to reply about this Laptop...
Will keep trying, but switch to legacy I can boot live USB easily. Switch hard drive to a gpt format and this silly system boots to "windows sign-in". I am going to run dban, later tonight and see if I can clean this windows boot that must be hiding someplace, Cmos I haven't a clue with HP Laptop win10 install...
