If I reboot I must use XMMS to play a MP3, or wait for Firefox ESR to play a youtube or viemo video with sound.
Then I restarting the Google Chrome web browser I will have sound

Tonight before I did a Hangout Video chat I had sound working in Google Chrome on youtube, earlier in the day vemo was working also. Now Google does not have any sound again. But Firefox can still play and so does XMMS. Now after rebooting Google Chrome it still does not have sound. I am at a loss...

Uptime: 2d 10h 43m , but am going to reboot the system and try to get sound working again...

Reboot: Google Chrome has no sound after using Firefox ESR, but after playing a MP3 with XMMS and opening Google chrome several times with out sound, 4th time and it will play -

I see you have two audio devices listed. Maybe your browsers are getting confused as to which one to use. I'll have to let the antiX gurus take it from here as I use MX which has different configuration tools for setting a default sound card system-wide, and I don't know how to do that in antiX. (Anyway, both of my computers only have one onboard sound card.)

With two sound cards alsamixer > F6 should let you choose your sound card, & I think aslactrl store will make it permanent.

If not, creating a .asoundrc should do the trick.

F6 allowed me to set audio to the correct sound card, as dolphin_oracle suggested earlier. For one reason or another I could not get my choice of video card to stay using the control centre method (have no explanation for this other than user error).

With sound card change and staying on the correct device the sound problem persists.

My current solution is following entropyfoe suggestion: open a audio file with XMMS and letting it play for a bit, then opening and closing Google Chrome web browser several times in succession until sound is working in a random youtube or Vimeo link.

What I find most strange is I can get sound from Firefox ESR immediately after playing a sound file with XMMS, but it takes several tries opening the Google Chrome web browser (I depend on Google sync with a number of different devices).

I allow this system to run 24/7 seeding MX and Antix via Qbittorrent, and in the morning sound has disappeared from Google, or if I have left this system alone for hours I need to jolt the system again by playing an XMMS sound file.

Mixer, Using F6 seemed to make audio card choice stick (dolphin_oracle suggested earlier). aslactrl store (something I do not understand) should not be necessary as this is a beta install. Nor ,asoundrc, but if you feel I should do these, for testing purposes please provide a bit more for info or directions for "aslactrl store", or is ,asoundrc file the procedure for creating an "aslactrl store"?

I posted my "fix" over at the antiX forum.

I installed the beta three times.
On the third, I made sure the sound worked live.
For my sound chip, and similar to your setup, your video has a sound option through hdmi. [this has always been a pain in the butt]
and there is the sound chip.

For me the key is live and on a fresh install is to start at the top right on the control panel, hardware, right column of options, first use the sound card chooser. I think I was messing with other settings first, and messed things up. So I got sound working in the live session with the sound card chooser.
Then I installed. I ran synaptic upgrades, and then I did the sound card chooser, and sound functioned on all programs, audacity, XMMS, and firefox ESR (youtube). It was that easy.

I cannot speculate why I had so many problems, the md5 was good on the download, the the iso was installed to usb with MX USB Creator.
And the same USB created the current working install. Also I did not get sound in beta1, probably my same mistake.

I think the key is get working live, then, on a fresh install, go to control center, and use the sound card chooser first, get that right, selecting in our cases the non-HDMI video audio device.

Regarding the Black Screen of Death issue on my system, it's still there in beta 2 but only in the 64-bit version. Booting stalls for 3 minutes at "start X" then prompts me to press atl+F1 to see the boot error, which is that slim didn't start. If I press alt+F10 to return then alt+F2 to do a console login I can manually start slim and get the GUI desktop.

If I boot from the 386 version I don't have the issue, slim starts as expected and I go right to the GUI desktop.

Both boots are from a live USB created with MX Live USB Maker and booted with no persistence and with all of the default boot parameters and options. All I did was hit enter at the boot menu.

I just have the onboard graphics card. It's a ASRock A780GM-LE motherboard and I have 8GB of DDR2-800 RAM installed.

Edit: I just retried booting from the 386 version again and this time it also failed to start slim. Weird, it worked only once.
