[SOLVED] Thunderbird date format

#1 Post by Klaas Vaak »

The Thunderbird date format is MM/DD/YYYY, i.e. US format. In the preferences it shows that the regional locale in English (US). How can I set that to English (UK)?

If you setup the (correct) settings for your OS to English (UK), it should take them over automatically.

I understand that; I have another laptop with Mint installed, and there my regional locale is set as English (UK). That setting came up during the installation process, not so with Mint.
So, do you have a Clue (:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) as to where that setting is on antiX?

Thunderbird is basically Firefox with another default view and less settings.
There are many different versions, each localized for 1 language.

If you have the international (en_US) version installed, instead of the localized one, you can add additional languages over the package management.

Basically international Firefox should take over the preset OS localization automatically, but you still need to have the language files installed.
Sometimes it can happen that it still doesn't show the correct localization and then you have to change it over the 'about:config'.

Thunderbird is very similar, just that you change the settings over 'Config Editor'.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/config-editor

There was also an add on for that purpose, working for some, not working for the others.
https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-us/th ... onfigdate/

As the add on is saying: "The date formats are depending on your systems/regions setting, too (e.g.: "25.08.2005 15:54" in Germany or "2005/08/25 15:54" in US)."

Either the OS of your choice has a GUI to add/remove or change localizations/region settings or you need to to it manually ('Debian way of life').

OK, but which setting among the 1000s of settings is it?

I tried this addon before and was not happy with it, mostly because it does give the yyyy-mm-dd format. Their statement "..."2005/08/25 15:54" in US" is not offered. Furthermore, the US does not even use that format.

So, I can try to change the Config Editor setting 1st, and if that does not work, change the localisations/region settings as per the 'Debian way of life'.

You download the localizations for desired language and applications over the package management (Synaptic is the easiest):
1. OS localization
2. LibreOffice Localization
3. Firefox Localization
4. Thunderbird Localization
5. All other applications localizations (GIMP ...)

6. Remove all unneeded localizations
7. Reboot

8. You check if all of the applications show the desired localizations
If necessary, you try to change it over their own settings 1st.
Reboot if you did some changes.

9. If that still didn't work for you, you need to reconfigure all settings manually (according to Debian Wiki).

The only language package in Synaptic is for LibreOffice: libreoffice-|10n-en-gb
But I don't need that one. There is nothing for Thunderbird, nor for the other ones you mentioned though that does not bother me. Thunderbird is the one I am after.

For Seamonkey and Thunderbird, the date format is inherited from your locale settings (specifically LC_TIME). See this article.

I've no clue why you're missing what's there -- did you change the sources?
My Synaptic certainly has the Thunderbird & Lightning language files.
