It is possible to install antix core but with a wm in the case rox-icewm?

#1 Post by overlock »

Hello, my question is how do I install only 1 wm, in case I really like rx-icewm, but I do not want the others, is it possible for me to install antix core and then how do I get a full rox-icewm from antix?

Your shortest path would be to choose the antiX base version then

apt purge jwm desktops-defaults-jwm-antix menu-jwm antix
^----- wheeeee! Doing so frees a whopping 980Kb or so of drive space
then
apt purge fluxbox desktop-defaults-fluxbox-antix fluxbox-themes-antix
^----- Doing so frees approx 7.2Mb of drive space

(hmm, I can't recall whether base also ships herbstluftwm)
apt purge herbstluftwm
^----- 530Kb

===========================

If you insist on starting with the core version, you would need to manually
apt install desktop-defaults-rox-antix roxterm
and
apt install desktop-defaults-icewm-antix icewm-common icewm-icons-cupertino-antix icewm-themes-antix icewmcc-antix icewm
then
spend a month or so discovering whatall additional items (present in base or full version) you'll want/need to have onboard

ps:
an apt hook runs the "update-menus" script during each apt operation.
IIRC, the update-menus script spews warnings/errors if the expected JWM files are absent.

Our thanks, it was exactly what I needed, I am a fan of the antix, an incredible distro mainly for me that I own a weak pc, and I need a super lean system for my hardware, and I am sure that I can wipe the antix to run well on my hardware, just a doubt I installing the packages I need, plus the environment I like I already have a system ready and functional? or do I have to make adjustments? because I do not have much knowledge about these wm, but I need to learn to be able to make my pc very smooth.
And another doubt, I use my tv as a monitor connected via hdmi, and I do not have a sound box, I read that I need the audio pulse to hear the sound through the tv, I tried to install the pulse more it presented error, there is another way to hear the sound through tv without or press audio?

Dolphin_oracle made a series of videos on AntiX Core - Guide to a custom install. This might be interesting to watch. In the 4th video he installs X and a desktop manager.

IMO removing software from antiX-base or even antiX-full won't do much to make your system more smooth. The main effect will be that it takes up less disk space. Unused software just sits on the disk doing nothing. You might get a little boost out of disabling some services. If you have enough disk space then IMO you are better off starting with antiX-base or antiX-full and don't try to make it even more lean (for now). Showing us the output of "inxi -Fxx" would let us know what you are dealing with.

In the Control Centre (and from the command line) there is a program called alsa-set-default-card that should help you change sound to the tv. There is a "speaker test" built in so you can see if it worked or not. I do not guarantee 100% this will do what you need but it is easy to try and simpler than installing Pulse Audio.

thanks for the clarification, I had thought about it, that it would be possible to have an extra gain, but not great or expected and not to mention the great work, I will test this tool that recommended me and return with the result (it will work, I do not like the pulseaudio or systemd).

I'm not on my pc but it's the same hardware as mine;

I did the test and it did not work, I think only the pulseaudio itself to manage the hdmi, what a shame, do not you have an alternative?

Did you already look, if you have enabled and unmuted the output with alsamixer ?
control-centre--->Hardware--->audio settings
Or from terminal
alsamixer

I made the normal installation with the iso core, normal, I was installing as recommended here, with only the packages that I actually use, with the favorite desktop (icewm), okay after the reboot falls on a black screen and does not leave, I called the tty2 loguei gave a startx uploaded the interface more frozen the system, keyboard does not work, mouse nothing, only a cpu meter in the bar was working normal, had to rebutton on the button, I am using in live mode, which may have occurred I installed xorg, xserver, slim, icewm.

Thank you for this magnificent thread and guidance. I am disappointed in myself that it took me so long to find it. :mad: I have just followed @skidoos instructions and now have a bspwm version of antiX19b3 in VBox. :number1: I will continue to work with it to tune and adjust things to my preferences. Just as an aside (by the by) bspwm boots and idles at 164MB in my VBox setup: running, polybar, tint2, rofi, kitty, compton... :bagoverhead:
