(abandoned) Stuck at Slim login screen

#1 Post by zorzi »

Hello,

My two antiX installations 17.3.1 (one in Virtualbox, the other on my laptop) give me trouble.

After installing, updating the system, I'm stuck at the Slim login screen after reboot. I can't enter my login. Keyboard does not answer.

Don't know how to solve the problem.

If someone can help.

Thanks.

Can you try to boot into console (run-level 3), by adding 3 separated with a space at the end of the linux-line within the GRUB-menu.
Edit GRUB-menu by pressing "E"-key ( that's the letter "E") navigate with arrow-keys (left,right, up, down)
press F10 to boot when ready.
Login as normal user and see if it works normally.
If you can't you might have screwed up permissions (do you use root user to often ?) of the user home directory
or no-space left on device etc.
If you can login check all is working and do go further into runlevel 5 ( X-environment)
by entering:

Code: Select all

sudo telinit 5
See how your keyboard behaves ....

Hello Fehlix,

Thanks for answering. I've followed your advice with my antix virtual machine (on virtualbox).

Everything is ok, keyboard works in console until I reach Slim again where nothing answers.

Meanwhile, I've reinstalled the sytem on my laptop. With my re-installation on laptop, I'm unable to recreate the problem for the moment.
I've been very carefully with updates this time, because I remembered I had been asked a few times during the process if I wanted to replace or keep configuration files for some apps.
I selected "yes" each time where I had selected "no" before.
I suspect a conflict between old conf files and apps updates.

EDIT: Problem is back with my laptop. All i did between before reboot was configuring wifi connection. Could this be linked ?

This option will disable some startup services for faster booting and less memory consumption.
L = lean Turn off some services
X = Xtralean Turn off even more services
M = mean Turn off some networking services

eg.

disable=lxm

Are you using default stretch/stable repos?

antiX with runit - lean and mean.

Hello. Thanks a lot but the problem persists.

Yes, I'm using stable repos. I've checked md5sum, everything seems correct.

1) Locale fr

2) With control center, and then wifi configuration via wicd if my memories are good.

I used to break slim login on my older gear by installing newer kernels after a install.
Using the grub menu. I'd boot into my previous working kernel and delete my kernel upgrade changes.

Another way I'd experiment is I would install xdm and not use slim at all.
This was on early antiX 8.5 core installs.

Edit: My symptoms were I would log in. Then get kicked right back to the slim log in screen.
