Ok, my head is spinning a little. But I really appreciate the expertise shown by you guys. I will do as you suggest and try it. But I do have to read up on making backups first.

I do have another machine I can try it on. But I need to learn the right way to do the backups. I'll work on it.

I'm assuming that antiX-17 does not have the MX repos in the sources files for a reason. I don't know what that reason is though. Why did antiX-15/16 have MX-15 repos in the sources but antiX-17 does not have a similar association with an MX-17 repo?

MX-17/18 includes apps that require libs from beyond debian stable as stevo mentions (eg vlc), and this makes it more difficult to dist-upgrade to later versions.
Basically, antiX attempts to keep to debian stable as much as possible. We are less concerned about providing the latest shiny packages.

Here's an update on my installing the latest streamtuner2 on antiX-17.

I decided to download and install the .deb file from the mxrepo.com location instead of enabling the entire repo in the sources lists.

Before I installed the .deb file I created a backup of my system. I got a little confused on exactly how to best make the backup, I ended up using the iso-snapshot. It did work but it took almost three hours. This is a P-III with 512 Mb Ram and I chose to save directly to the USB drive, so it was slow. Maybe I should have used the luckyBackup software instead. I'll try that next to see if it goes any faster.

I also installed gdebi since it was missing from the standard install of antiX-17. After I installed gdebi I used it to install the streamtuner2 package. Everything completed with no errors and I had streamtuner2 version 2.2.1 installed. I tested it and it works fine.

So, no problems using the .deb file and gdebi. I will probably go ahead an include the mxrepo in my sources and just be careful to keep it disabled unless I need a particular package.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and pointing me in the right direction. I think I am now understanding how to manage the repos in antiX without borking my system.
