For what it's worth, if I try to create a dd live USB using the dd functionality in the full GUI tool called "MX Live USB Maker" in MX Tools (package = mx-live-usb-maker):
I get a pop up error message when I click Next. I had this issue some time ago. I think I reported it but in the end just used terminal or the following antix tool because I never got the former to work. I thought it was just me or my old USB sticks.
WIth the exact same thumb drive still plugged into the same port, if I next open "dd Live-USB" (search in the whisker menu for that name; the package = live-usb-maker-gui) works fine.

Re: (solved)live-usb-maker does not work for me
Same error I got IIRC. Adrian told me to try live-usb-maker from the terminal instead, that one did work.

Yup, the terminal interface works, or the simpler GUI frontend from antiX.

i gave up on it and forgot it
I f the code works the First time something is incomplete
Re: (solved)live-usb-maker does not work for me
I should provide more troubleshooting info, since I had that happening to me, I have found at least one cause of it. So for example if the ISO is on a system that doesn't allow mounting the ISO like for example in my case a shared VirtualBox folder the tool will crap out and post that message (same thing would happen if the ISO was on a NTFS or exFAT partition) Not sure if that's what happened in your case but it's possible...
Re: (solved)live-usb-maker does not work for me
My iso was on my Data partition, which was on a GPT hard drive and which partition was ext4 formatted.
The Data partition is automounted on all my distros via fstab entry.

Re: (solved)live-usb-maker does not work for me
OK, maybe it was something else, you could get a clue you start mx-live-usb-maker from the CLI and then copy the live-usb-maker command it generates again (with sudo in front) and see what error it displays. Again I should make it easier to troubleshoot, maybe write a log...
Re: (solved)live-usb-maker does not work for me
OK, built a new mx-live-usb-maker with logging enabled (it will spit messages to /var/log/mx-live-usb-maker.log) maybe that would give us a clue of what is going on. The new build is in our github repo:
