antiX-16-a1_386-full available

#1 Post by anticapitalista »

32 bit full version only at the moment. NB: This is an Alpha build

There aren't too many differences under the hood between this version and the 15/15.1 release.

Main differences are:

* 4.4.2 kernel so those cheap netbooks that have flooded the market will work correctly (many need 4.3 kernel and later)
* UEFI support in the installer. Work in progress and works for 64 bit only.

antiX-16, although based on Debian Jessie, uses sysvinit and eudev.

We are proudly systemd-free!

Defaults to IceWM with a Rox desktop. F6 at live boot gives the user many options.

For those with very old laptops/desktops, the lightest option in terms of RAM usage is JWM.

The min-* options do not use a desktop and no wallpaper to keep RAM usage down to a bare minimum.

Please test on real hardware as well as in VBox.

We are particularly interested in finding out how well the iso-snapshot app works as well as running live with persistence and remastering the running live session.

Users happy with antiX-15 have no need to replace it with this version.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - lean and mean.

Some fine refinement for installer, the default label for root is rootantiX-15 it should be rootantiX-16 (or even rootantiX-16-a1, so people will know what is that partition).

In iso-snapshot "next" button has the tooltip "start scanning for shares" because I re-used the template from mx-findshares to create the GUI for the snapshot program, I just removed that from mx-snapshot.

Looks good, as always I'm amazed by how fast IceWM boots.
Installed to partition on desktop. My desktop look:
antix16a1rh.jpg
Notes:
Partition Image
1. put a note to use TAB to switch around
2. I wasn't able to get it to clone, since it wanted the partition unmounted.

Will try tomorrow; didn't find the iso-snapshot app or how to backup running partition?

RoxFiler:
1. is there a way to stop RoxFiler from changing the size of its window? I find it disconcerting.
Probably just set in my ways. I usually just install Thunar and DoubleCmd. :)

Tomorrow to play with Preferences, etal.

NOTE: Thanks for include Caracas in the time zones. rh.

right click in a rox-filer window, select Options>Filer Windows. The options for rox window sizing are there.

Notes, cont'd:
3. No temps; ACPI, HDD, etc.
4. Set Root password but in use, it is not clear whether asking for sudo=user or su=admin.
Synaptic will only boot from menu when using user pwd.

ISO-Snapshot
I found it. :)
Created ISO of 730 MB.
In antiX didn't find easy way to check md5sum.
I know how, just didn't find a GUI way, yet.
Will check to see if it boots. Later, got to go do errands.

and installed from snapshot back onto HDD. Wiped the original install of antiX-16a1 on sda6,

Re: antiX-16-a1_386-full available

#8 Post by masinick »

As reported on the antiX Forum note, I was able to download the antiX-16-a1_386-full image. I used dd to dump it to a 32 GB USB and was able to boot from it. I created two different persistent collections on two distinct file partitions and both behaved as expected and there were no surprises. It worked amazingly well in the first Alpha, and though I am sure that there is work to be done, the very first build was able (easily) to:

1. Save a bootable ISO image.
2. Run Live from a USB direct transfer of the ISO image (dd image dump).
3. Frugal persistence works.
4. Full persistence works.
5. Meta package installer works.

Much more to test, but I loaded the 32 bit image and successfully ran it on a 64 bit system. The system I used was a Dell Inspiron 5558 with 8 GB memory, 1 TB Disk - more than enough, and it works well with the current image.

I hope to test with my older hardware as well to make sure that this release still supports Gateway 2000 PA6A and Lenovo 3000 Y410, both of which have worked extremely well in the past.

I'll send any statistics on my testing directly to the antiX forum bearing this same topic.
