Whatever is in version 18.1 does not fix my boot problem.
Our changes didn't made into the point-release MX 18.1 yet, that's why you are seeing the same misbehaviour.
But this brings me to an idea, whether I can send you a fix (patch) to check, that our changes would work.
If you happy with it to check our fix, let me know and I prepare some instructions over the week end
and send you a PM.
Thanks

That's fine fehlix. Not going anywhere for the moment so I can test your fixes on my iMac.

Hi, has there been any further development on this issue.

I'm asking as I have the same problem and can not boot from
the MX Linux 18.2 or 18.1 USB Image.

Grub comes up with: error unknown file system and
you need to load the kernel first.

I'm using a 2011 Imac with a debian stretch and kde installed on it.

I have a 30GB partition at the end of my hard drive to
sometimes try linux distros. So far all I ever tried was booting
without any problems from the usb-stick and from a feeling
I tried around 15 other distros over the last 2 years.

Unfortunately no luck with MX so far

Any idea someone?

Ahh, ok another iMac ... need to look into my conversion script I made , which might create an MX ISO to boot with iMAc.
Would you mind to post system info from that iMac by running from terminal command line:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
So if you are interested I can provide you with a little script for creating a (hopefully) bootable MX Linux ISO on imac.
Need to re-test the script first ... :snail:

Hi Fehlix, thanks to have a look at the issue.

yes I like to try your script as I think MX is worth to have a closer look at.

I also tried the additional commands from the grub command line you posted
here earlier and after that I was able to boot the iso.

My concern is if I install it as it is it will stuff my bootloader up.

Anyway following the system infos you asked for.

Ahh, cool you booted already. That's good. The puzzle I'm trying to solve is iMac's special handling of USB/ISO EFI-booting.
This issues will not show up, when installed, as the GRUB installer during the install is effectively the same used by other distributions. Im going to prepare something, and if you would help us to solve the puzzle that would be great. ... :snail:

Yes I'm more than happy to help and solve the problem. If you have a modified
iso just send me the link where I can find it and I try it.

Thank you for your support with this one.

It appears there is already iMac workaround solution.
Perhabs you can try as this workaround first mentioned in this thread
here: viewtopic.php?p=498532#p498532
If that works, we would have at least a workaround.

I think this is not the solution for my iMac. The workaround that Matt describes
on his homepage is only for older Macs. It is for a group of Macs that was
manufactured between 2006 - 2008 and these Macs have a Core 2 duo
processor. These Macs have a 64 bit cpu but only a 32 bit Efi. Means
all distros will fail to boot a 64 bit iso as the Efi is only 32 bit.

He also makes that clear on his homepage where it says: "To be on the same
page this is a workaround for 64/32 bit Macs"

My mac is newer. It has a I3 cpu 64 bit and a 64 bit Efi. Means the Mac
should be able to boot any 64 bit Linux iso.

There must be a little but nasty bug in the MX iso that prevent the Imac
from booting the iso. At the moment I'm running a 64bit Debian and the
iso just boots fine. Also with other distros I tried no problem. Just use Etcher
to install the iso on the usb stick and off we go.

I have not tried yet to install MX with your Grub terminal commands but
will do that soon and report back what happens.

I have installed MX now on my hard drive. I booted the iso with
your grub command line commands and that works.
Than from the running live system I installed to hard drive.
Reboot and all good, MX comes up as expected.

Well that's OK for me but not ideal for he MX project as there is a bug
in the iso that will prevent some users to boot the iso and try MX.

If I can be helpful to solve the issue I am more than happy to do so.
Just let me know what you want me to try.
