Beta testing MXFB-2.1

#1 Post by Jerry3904 »

OK, we're less than a week away from release, announcement and all that. We've worked through a lot of bugs and annoyances over the last few days, and would like a few people (not beginners, please) to take a close look for us over the next few days.

1. Download the debs by going to this page:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1V3Ty0 ... BWrY91K8F6

and clicking the download icon in the upper right corner.

2. Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the archive, right-click mx-fluxboz-2.1.zip > Extract.

3. Enter the extracted folder, right-click a blank space > Open Terminal Here

4. Run this command:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i *.deb
5. Open a terminal (F4 will do it) and enter this command:

Code: Select all

mxflux_install.sh
This step is necessary because we don't install into the Home folder as a matter of principle.

6. Log out and log (back) into MX-Fluxbox, and you will be looking at the point release beta. (And you'll see an oops right away, sigh)

There are a variety of changes to the menu, new wallpapers, updates to mx-idesktool, and a new mx-dockmaker application for making custom docks. There is also a default dock. And a Japanese translation of the FAQ! BTW: pls read the FAQ, it is not long and will save a lot of questions.

This thread is for feedback, thanks.

The obvious oops: there are two sets of desktop icons mixed together. The ones that are supposed to be there are the new ones that we have been working on: hover your cursor over the calculator icon whose caption begins "2x..." That means that you can now write, edit and use these icons for two separate commands. click once left mouse button, one app launches. Click once right mouse button, a different one launches. Click once with the middle button and mx-idesktool launches with a focus on that icon. So the "2x Docs" can give you both the MXFB FAQ and the User Manual! So awesome...

Ha! Part of the joy of installing over a well-used MXFB.

Looking real good on my machine Jerry. mx-dockmaker looks like a keeper.

Not sure why, but xfce4-terminal misbehaves on this version and the previous version of fluxbox-mx for me. It starts up with no window dressing, so I can't drag the title bar anywhere as there is no title bar. After a right-click it becomes inactive and yet layers itself on top of the rest of the windows and my only option is to kill it with the nifty window killer in the fluxbox menu. My workaround has been to just use mate-terminal instead.

Edit: The xfce-terminal error message is:

Code: Select all

Failed to connect to session manager: Failed to connect to the session manager: SESSION_MANAGER environment variable not defined
I did some web searching on that error message, and the results I looked at were cryptic, with no clear solutions during my limited research.

Did you right-click the terminal screen > Preferences? Otherwise, delete the config and start clean: $HOME/.config/xfce4/terminal/terminalrc

Deleting terminalrc did the trick, thanks.

Hello Jerry3904
the /.idesktop file here does not contain what is described as a calculator icon. none of the four entries here have a caption (blank) that shows on hover. The content is not what you wish the test.
How to get the newer file?
Already went fresh install. upgrade. download the 2.1 zip. the instructions to install debs. no new lnk files. mx-idesktool_20.05.01

Hello Jerry3904
The first mx_install.sh did not create backup files. This being a fresh install with not yet a login to fluxbox , this was not surprise.
Looking for new icons ran
The second run of mx_install.sh did not create any backup files. It did overwrite the /.fluxbox files.

edit: corrected. Found. ...following ...
