The 2 .deb packages from the zip file installed nicely in my MX17-preRC1 install.
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics
Clevo N130WU-based Ultrabook: Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R), 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics (UEFI)
ASUS X42D laptop: AMD Phenom II, 6GB RAM, Mobility Radeon HD 5400
Except that after having installed it once via deb files (originally without lollypop-portal deb file) and now twice successfully via Synaptic in MX17 real metal and a VM, I'm thinking that lollypop-portal may not be necessary as a dependency after all.
In both the Synaptic installations (where you included lollypop-portal as a dependency), the first-time opening of Lollypop still crashes, in that it closes immediately after you open it. But after that, all subsequent openings just work. It's really weird.

For interest's sake, I installed flatpak from Test Repo in MX15 /16, then followed some instructions found after some Web research to install the flatpak version of lollypop in MX15 /16, except I was lazy and skipped a step to install a Gnome environment from flatpak repositories before installing lollypop itself.
Playing music files from your collection on hard drive worked. Streaming Internet radio didn't. Playing a Playlist of random music from your collection crashed the program and made it shutdown. Program did not follow the gtk theme set for my Xfce session (arc theme) and remained in the horrible all-white basic Adwaita.
I subsequently installed the flatpak repo's Gnome environment as instructed but no change. I thought maybe I had to recreate and install lollypop within the now existing flatpak Gnome environment so I uninstalled lollypop and redid it. No change.
Wondering whether the reinstall merely put back together the old package from some temp folder or cache but couldn't find any flatpak commands to purge old packages. This was standard sysvinit MX, not systemd, so that's another potential cause of the problems?
Anyway, as an experiment on flatpak it went further and worked better than a previous trial of mine a year ago on another distro . I'm pleasantly surprised that lollypop even partially worked.
However, looking at the list of applications available in flatpak versions, I didn't see any that interested me apart from lollypop. Perhaps the Debian versions of some of these are older than the flatpak versions, but that doesn't really matter to me.

I've hated the UI changes I see from using Lollypop in Manjaro (hiding by default the option for Radio Stations, what gives? Also, an initial popup asking for contributions) so had not requested any update for MX17/18. But no worries, I'll just re-enable the Radio Stations/internet radio option in the left panel if there's an update.
I however request for Lollypop to be packaged for MX19 eventually, as it's not in Buster Repos nor Buster Backports (Bullseye).
I hadn't bothered yet, as I've been using Lollypop flatpak to test MXPI's flatpak functions in the MX19 alpha and beta isos.

Thanks for the information, I will try to test it via flatpak, in a first step.
